I know that my Great Great Grandfather was married in Carrick in 1845 but I wanted to know if he was baptised there? His name was Michael Goggin (or Goggan) and his wife Bridget Dunphy (Mooncoin).

  • Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

Do you know what religion Michael was?

Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. It also shows you where copies of the records are available.Carrick belongs to the Roman Catholic parish of Carrick on Suir.  For Carrick on Suir parish, follow this link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Tipperary%20South&parish=Carrick-on-Suir&churchid=1101

As you can see from the above link the parish records have a very early start date so if Michael was baptised in the parish there should be a record of it. It also shows that Waterford Heritage and Genealogical Centre have copies available. Here is their email address if you would like to contact them, however a fee may apply: mnoc@iol.ie

Most surviving Church of Ireland records are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. Here are their websites: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ and http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42

Lists of these surviving registers can also be found at the National Library of Ireland.

You could also search online at:

www.familysearch.org has a huge database of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland.

www.rootsireland.ie have a large collection of Irish Church records, however you have to pay to use this site.

    Kind regards,
