Seeking any information on my Grandmother Elizabeth Dougherty (Doherty). She was born somewhere in County Tipperary in 1880.One possible record of birth that I have found lists her birthplace as Knockfelagh.Limerick & Tipperary,Ireland.I think that means that she was born in a border town along the border of Limerick & Tipperary ???.Her Fathers name was David, either Dougherty or the common variation of Doherty. The birth record list the Mother as Ellen Buttler Doherty.I am not sure what her Mothers name was, only her Fathers name David is listed on her death certificate here in the USA.She emigrated to America sometime before 1905 and married a man named Charles Coolen of irish descent from Nova Scotia, Canada. They settled in Philadelphia,Pennsylvania,USA and had 6 children. My Father, Charles Coolen was the first born. She died in Philadelphia in 1927.Any information about her or any leads would be greatly appreciated.Thank You,Ralph Coolen,USA.

Hi Ralph,
Thank you for your message.
I have found a record in the 1901 census for the David and Ellen that you have mentioned, they lived in Knockphelagh which is in Solloghod-more civil parish Tipperary.
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Tipperary/Drumwood/Knockphelagh/1717588/
Solloghod-more is a parish that is on the border with Tipperary:
There is no Elizabeth listed as living in the household, but she may have already left at the time the census was taken. Do you know if your Elizabeth had any brothers or sisters had any brothers or sisters?
You could try looking for her birth record in church records in Solloghod-more parish which may give you some more information. Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. It also shows you where copies of the records are available. For Sologhhead parish, follow this link:
As you can see Limerick Genealogy have copies available online. If you would like to contact them here is their email, however a fee will apply: research@limerickgenealogy.com
You will also be able to find her birth record in civil records as civil registration began in 1864. Assuming her parents were married after this year you should also be able to find their marriage record which will give you more information on them. Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:
http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm
You can search the indexes to these records online at:
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347
Going back further, using Griffith?s Valuation you can see that there were Doherty?s in the parish as early as 1851, one of whom was named David, I wonder is it possible that one of these Doherty?s was Elizabeth?s grandfather? Perhaps if you are able to find a birth/marriage record for her father you will find more information on his parents.
Some other websites that you may find useful are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

Ireland Gen Projects: http://www.igp-web.com/tipperary/index.htmUS National Archives/Immigration info: http://www.archives.gov/research/immigration/
I hope some of this is helpful. Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
Kind regards,
