Hello. I'm looking for information about the family of Peter Goodwin (B. About 1865, D. 1927 in U.S.) and Ellen (Nellie) McKenna (B. 1866, D. 1937 in U.S.)
Also the parents of Peter J. Goodwin: Peter Goodwin B. About 1815, D. About 1877) and Mary McNally,(B. 11 Feb.1832, D. 8 Dec. 1898) who baptized a daughter here on 4 Dec. 1874 Their other children were: Catherine (About 1854), Patrick (about 1861),Edward (1862), Peter J.(about 1865), Mary (about 1866), Roseanna (1867), Phillip (1870), Margaret (about 1875) and Elizabeth ( about 1877)
Any information about the ancestors of Peter Goodwin and Mary McNally would be of great help in my research and would be very much appreciated.
Many Thanks,
KJ Goodwin

Hi KJ,
Thank you for your message. I hope that someone with information on the Goodwin?s contacts you and helps you to further your research. In the meantime, here are some resources you can use if you haven?t already:
Church Records:
Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. It also shows you where copies of the records are available. For Drumsnat/Kilmore parish, follow this link:
In the19th century new Catholic parishes were created so starting dates can sometimes be misleading. Many parishes changed their geographical spread so you may find earlier records relating to your family in the records of adjoining parishes
http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/rcmaps/monaghanrc.htm
Civil Records:
Civil registration began in Ireland in 1864 so any births, deaths or marriages in the family after this date would be recorded in these records. Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office. Here is their website:
http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm
You can search the indexes to these records up to 1958 online at:
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347
Census Records:
Census records from 1901/1911 are available online. These can give lots of useful information. You can search these here:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/
Land Records:
You could also check for record of the family in the land records pertaining to Ireland in the 19th century. There are two:
The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838) found at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp
and Griffith?s Valuation (1848-1864) found at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/
Some other websites that you may find useful are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx
The National Archives UK ? genealogy search: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/
The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm
Family Search: www.familysearch.org
Monaghan: http://www.monaghantourism.com/people.aspx
Genealogy links: http://www.genealogylinks.net/uk/ireland/monaghan/index.html
Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
Kind regards,

Thank you Ms. Emma Carty! I appreciate your very useful links. Through a cousin, we have been able to find birth records for a few of the children of my 2nd Great Grandfather (Peter Goodwin/ McGuiggan) and his wife Mary (nee McEnally) We have been able to establish that He was born in County Monaghan abt. 1814 and died in 1884. We are hopeful that we can identify his birth parents and siblings. And of course, we'd like like to find their parents and so on... Any information that you or a friend may have will be greatly appreciated, and I thank you again for taking the time to respond. God Bless!
