I am searching for relatives and information about the name McCarron in Northern Ireland, especially the parishes of Clogher and Dromore in County Tyrone.

My great great grandparents were Patrick McCarron, born 1818, son of Michael McCarron and Alice Hynes, born 1825, daughter of Patrick Hynes. Patrick and Alice left Ireland during or prior to the Famine. Patrick and Alice married in Providence RI in 1850. They may also have lived in Brooklyn, NY for a while. In 1857 they moved to Bloomington, IL. Their children were Edward, John, Mary Ann, Michael, Rose and Alice. In the 1930 US Census, two daughters were still alive but living in seperate states. Both told the census takers that their parents were from Northern Ireland.

Providence RI was a favorite destination for immigrants from Clogher. The neighboring parishs of Donacavey, Errigal Keerogue, Carnteel and especially Dromore had very many McCarrons in the Tithe Applotment Books and in Griffiths. RC church records in Dromore list 58 McCarron births between 1836 and 1879.

I hope someone reaches out with information on the Tyrone McCarrons, and possibly, hopefully information about Michael McCarron and his son Patrick.

  • Hi Cyn,

Thanks for the links, many of which I have consulted, yet new ones for me to try. Many sites, like Failte Romhat have information limited to specific names or parishes and never the one I am researching. Large sites like PRONI, National Archives and National Library do not have their catalogues digitized and online. Some day, hopefully.

Cotyroneireland.com is extremely useful. However, the one record that would really help me, the Tithe Applotment Books for the parish of Clogher, is only partial. Does that mean it was only partially transcribed or do parts no longer exist?

The one resource I am hoping for at Ireland Reaching Out is contacting other McCarrons or people with a knowledge of them in the parishes of Clogher, Dromore, Donacavey, Errigal Trough and others in that area.

    Thanks again,

    Tim

  • Tim,

Are you currently using the County Tyrone rootsweb mailing list? It is one of the best out there. I highly recommend it.

~~  Group members may be aware of the website cotyroneireland.com which has loads of resources and welcomes your contributions of information. The site is searchable and free.
That site is connected to the County TyroneIreland Mailing list ("CTI" for short) hosted by Rootsweb where you can post queries for all Tyrone and reach 830+ people (many who are not on FB).  You can post your interests and search or browse past posts which date from 1996-present.
Here’s a link to instructions on how to subscribe and receive posts via e-mail either: (1) as individual ones called “list mode” or (2) grouped in a daily "digest" (if there posts from that day). http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/NIR/CoTyroneIreland.html …; If you have any questions about the CTI Mailing List, just ask.

  • Yes, Thank you. I have checked into that mailing list from time to time. Always good to get a reminder, though. That is a helpful resource.

  • Hi

I have been researching my family tree and I have McCarron family from Clogher. Some info that may be useful in deciding if they are the same McCarrons.

I have a Mary McCarron born in 1836. She married Patrick McConnell also born in 1836 and died in 1912. They had several children Michael McConnel (birth unknown who died in Clogher poorhouse) Hugh McConnell 1864, Peter 1871-1931, Patrick 1865-1945, Rose Ann 1860 and Catherine 1866. Some of the family moved to America and made new lives there. The remaining ones became farmers and lived in/ near Ballyscally, Clogher, Tyrone.

Patrick McConnell married Catherine McElroy and had several children including

Catherine McConnell 1905, Minnie McConnell 1906, Agnes (Aggie moved to America) born 1908 she passed away we think??? in 2006. Francis Joseph 1909-1993 (my grandfather) Rose 1913-1998. We also have a Nun cassie later known as sister Uriel who went to a teaching missionary in Africa and is buried there. Rose and Aggie married into the McGinn and and another family (who's name escapes me at the moment and both emegrated to America and had families there.

I know nothing about the McCarron family and I would be interedted to learn. Clogher was always quite a small place and I think the families must be linked in some way.

I posted for some information on this site recently, and it was all extremely useful, which is how I know about Michael but I can find no more information. What I'm looking for are the poor house records (which may state how he came to be there. It sounds silly but we were all very sad to hear that he ended his days in the poor house!!) his date of birth and date of death. We assumed he was ill and went there for treatment??

I also have information about the McElroy side of the family.

    Best Wishes

    Emma

  • Hi Emma,

Thanks for your reply. These names are very close. Mary and Rose are first names passed down in my family, but I am sure that they are common to many Irish families. The timeline for the people you are researching is almost a generation later than the people I am searching for. Also, I have no McConnells that I know of in my background. I have a Patrick and Mary Ann McElroy who were friends and perhaps related to my McCarrons.

My gr gr grandfather, Patrick McCarron was born in 1818 and his wife Alice (Hynes) was born in 1825. Patrick's father's name was Michael and I speculate that he was born in the 1790's.

Like you say, though, the McCarrons of Clogher may have all been related, so we may be cousins, many times removed.

    Good luck with your research.

    Tim
