I have just found a birth certificate for my granddad - Michael Francis Hanlon, 28/9/1898.  He was born in Lower Albany Street.  Apparently my great grandparents were Thomas Hanlon and Bridget Hanlon (nee Lynch).  Anyone related to them out there!?

  • Hi Mike and welcome, you may have these but I will post them just in case

    Marriage 1896

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/1859d50594591 the Civil Record (State record) of the marriage will tell you if their fathers' were still living at the time of their marriage.

    Helen 1897

    Joanna Teresa 1900

In 1901 the family are living in a 3 family home in Mary St.

Michael Francis is recorded as Francis.

It is worthwhile checking out all the forms incl. in the links below the transcription

I can't find Thomas in the 1911 Census but he could be listed as Tom or some other name variantor he may have died or emigrated. There are 16 people named Hanlon or OHanlon in Tralee in 1911.

I don't know of any Hanlon families in Tralee (and there may be some) but there is a Hanlon family in Tonavane about 3 miles outside Tralee.

I'm not sure how much information you have which might help me to suggest the best way forward for you. If you would like to give me some more information I may be able to help you more,

    Warm wishes

    Martine

  • Hi Martine

that's amazing - lots of new information there!  Up until a few days ago I didnt even know where my granddad (Francis) had originated from!  Now I know it was Tralee and also from your research I can see his grandfather (Edward hanlon) plus a few of his siblings that we didnt know existed.

I am not familar with this type of research so you might be able to interpret the information better than me:

    - there is a baptism of Helen Hanlon on Feb 1897 but the 1901 census shows a Mary E hanlon (aged 4) - do you think that is likely to be the same person with a name change?

    - also there is a Hannah Hanlon on the 1901 census, aged 6 month who is registered as a boy.  Would Hannah have been a boys name back then?

-plus there is a baptism certificate for a Joanna Teresa Hanlon from 1900 but she is again not on the 1901 census, so I am guessing she must have died young.  It's possible, since we didnt know about the siblings of Francis Hanlon, that they may have all died relatively young, and  maybe his brother (Hannah)  in the war.

How would I go about finding out if I am related to any of the hanlon families that still live in the nearby area?

many thanks for your time looking at this

    regards

    Mike

  • Hi Mike, we sometimes see Ellen and Helen used interchangeably. Also it was the custom to name a new baby with the name of a baby who had died previously if it was an important name in the family.

There are some mistakes made by the census takers. Hannah is a girls name!

You are at the stage where you would need to order some certificates from the General Registry Office GRO. Make sure you ask for research copies only as they cost 4euros instaed of 20euros for the official copies.
