Barrington, Stack, Garrahy

My great-grandfather Martin Barrington was baptized November 2, 1833, in the RC church in Ennistymon, County Clare.  His parents were Patrick Barrington and Mary Stack.  Besides Martin, children born to Patrick and Mary included Thomas (1828), John (1831), Patrick (1836), Catherine (1843?) and Mary Ann (1844?).  The baptismal sponsors for these children included several Garrihys (Terrence, James, Nancy, and Dan) as well as Stacks (Joan, Patrick and M. Stack) and Thomas Connors.  It is possible that the family lived in the tiny townland of Mooghna, where Garrihys were common at the time, and that there were additional Barrington children.

Martin, with his sisters Catherine and Mary Ann, emigrated to Canada, at exactly what time we do not know. In late 1853 Martin purchased a farm in Flos Township, Simcoe County, in what is now Ontario.  He married another Irish immigrant's daughter, Cecelia Loughney, on Sept. 2, 1860.  In 1864, Cecelia's parents and children moved to the US, settling in Wisconsin, where Martin, Cecelia and their children joined them, arriving in 1866.  Both families lived near one another in Ironton, Sauk County, WI.  Catherine stayed in Canada, marrying another Irish immigrant, John Moran, and Mary Ann later married Michael Moore and lived in Barrie, Ontario.
