In case anybody from this parish joins - I am looking for any tidbit of information about Patrick Walsh from the Rower who was born in 1795, or there abouts (ther are no birth records this far back). Patrick emigrated to Newfoundland where he married and died. Patrick is my Great Great Grandfather. I don't expect a reply but still hopeful.

  • Hi Frank

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I am not from that parish, but wondered if you could add any other info you have about Pat so that a volunteer can have a clearer picture of what you know about him and his life.

    All the best

  • Hi, Clare: All I know about Patrick is that he married Mary Bow in 1835 in St. John's, Newfoundland. Parish records have Patrick being from Rore(a corruption of the Gaelic for Rower - priest not a Gaelic speaker). Patrick and Mary had a son, Michael Walsh (1836) and a daughter, Mary (1838). Michael and Mary erected a headstone for their parents who both died in St. John's, Newfoundland in 1865. The headstone gives Patrick's birth place as Kilkenny and Mary (his wife's) as Waterford.

Not much to go on but you never know------.

  • Happy New Year!

It could be the case that Patrick was born in a parish that predates parish records. RC records for Inistioge (The Rower) begin in 1810 so if he was born there it will be too early for a baptism record. I take it his Newfoundland marriage record doesn't name his father?

  • Hi, Clare. It's been a long time since I corresponded but I've been very busy with other matters. Patrick's marriage gave his origon as "Roar" (the presiding Priest, being non-Gaelic speaking , spelled Pat's Parish (or village) as he heard it.Unfortunately Patrick was born around 1795 and BMD records, as you said, only go back as far as 1810. Having said that rootsireland.ie goes back beyond 1810. My problem is that I don't know whether Pat was from the village or the parish of The Rower. Hopefully someone from The Rower will join this parish and I could correspond with them.

    All the best.

  • Hi again

It would be no harm to keep an eye on the Early Birth and Marriage Index - it is updated regularly and if your ancestor doesn't appear there now they may in the future.

    Best wishes
