My ggranfather Peter Coffey was born in Kilcormac to Anne (Rigney) and Thomas Coffey in 1864. He had three sisters: Catherine, Bridget and Anne. There might have been other siblings born before Peter. Peter went to New York and eventually married Anne Horan from Ballynamire, Offaly in 1891. I'm trying to find any info on the Coffey or Rigney families and if any are still in the area.

  • Jean:

From the 1901 census, it appears the family lived in Ballyfarrell townland in Killoughy parish. Anne had died by 1901 and Thomas and bridget were living in the house. By 1911, Thomas was deceased. Bridget lowered her age from 38 to 27 from 1901 to 1911. Not sure why but likely this is the same Bridget.

I checked the civil death index records and Thomas either died in 1906 or 1909. See two death index records below. Only way to confirm would be to contact the General Register Office and have them check for the correct record. Copies cost around 4 euros each. I looked for death index records for Anne and there was one in 1892 and another in the first quarter of 1901 right before the 1901 census was taken. I think the 1901 record is the likely one for your ancestor.

  • Col, my great grandmother Anne Horan's maiden name was Mahon from Killurin. I know about her family. She married Peter Coffey whose parents where Thomas Coffey and Anne Rigney. That's as far back on the Coffey side I go. Trying to find out about Thomas Coffey and Anne Rigney's parents.

Roger, I also came across those records of Thomas and Bridget. Is there any way to find out the parents of Thomas from any records or to find out if Peter Coffey had older brothers?....maybe a  Thomas or Edward. Thomas and Anne were married in 1852 and had three girls before Peter who was born in 1863.

Peter and Anne started their family in 1892, they named their boys Thomas, Edward, John & Peter. The name Edward is not in Anne (Mahon) family , so I thought maybe Peter wasn't the oldest son of Thomas Coffey. If Peter was the only boy, I could guess that Thomas Coffey's father could be Peter but I am not finding and Peters in early records.

To make things more confusing, I found a Joseph Coffey,50, and Charles Coffey,60, living at Ballynamire in 1901 where Peter's wife Anne Horan was raised.

  • Jean:

Thomas and Anne were married before civil registration of RC marriages started in 1864 and church marriage records did not show parents names as shown on the record Col provided. I looked in the Griffiths Valuation records for Killoughy civil parish from 1853 and the only Coffey in the parish was a Richard Coffey in Lowerton More townland.

It might be helpful to review the Kilcormac parish register to see if you can make inroads with your Coffeys. Records go back to 1821.
