Is there a group that shares DNA results for residents of Ennistymon or people with ancestors from there?  This has helped me with brickwalls in other areas of my family tree.

  • Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I am not aware of any such group and we don't have one on our website as DNA testing is still quite new as a genealogical tool in Ireland. You could add a message to our FB page and ask there:

  • I’d like to connect with people who live in or have ancestors from the Ennistymon and surrounding area, to share kit numbers for comparison on gedmatch.

I have only family lore that points my McNamara’s to Ennistymon mid 1700’s, we ended up in Mayo, and comparing DNA may help knock down my brick wall.

Surname(s)        Kit #’s (with alpha for Gedmatch)

    McNamara        F387489, F391289, F435500

  • Hi back4mac - I am intrigued by your search and offering my McNamara GEDCOM A903014.  Looking forward to sharing more about our McNamara families.  Fiona

  • Hi Fiona,

Unfortunately, our DNA kit comparison on Gedmatch didn't find anything.  Are your Macs also from Ennistymon area?  We have a Thomas McNamara with 2 sons, Patrick and William coming from Ennistymon to Louisburgh, Co. Mayo about 1789 and leasing land in the townland of Callacoon (Callicoon, Collacoon) from Marquis of Sligo.  Patrick, my  GGGrandfather worked at Westport House as a coachman.  This has long been my dead end since I have not been able to confirm that they came from Co. Clare and was hoping DNA might unlock that door.  I have loads of information on what happened after they moved north but would love to confirm that they did come from Ennistymon and learn about the connections there.  Regards - Colleen

  • I had believed so based on family lore, that we were kin to William (supposedly a cousin of my GGGrandfather)...this was based on knowledge that he was a greenskeeper at Lahinch.  I currently have Co Clare Heritage & Geneaology Centre doing some research, so I will certainly let you know what I find out..

  • Turns out my McNamara kin are not related to those in Ennistymon after all.. Wishing you luck in your search.

  • FamilyTreeDNA (https://www.familytreedna.com/) has both Clare Roots and McNamara DNA projects, if you are interested.  You would need to upload your DNA files there, and then join those project groups.

  • Hi Terry,

Yes, I'm in both those FTDNA projects, also added my brother 391289 a while back.
