I was informed thet my Great Great Grandfather, Thomas Gernon, was born on 4/29/1828 in the small town of Lurgan in the Parish of Darver, Louth.  His parents were Nickolas Gernon (b 6/25/1803) and Mary Boyle (b 8/9/1805).  Thomas Gernon emigrated to New Orleans, Luisiana, USA in 1850.

I will be visiting Ireland in April with my son and grandson, (all three of us are named Thomas Gernon) and we would like to find more about our ancesters in Louth.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

We have a very knowledgable volunteer in the southern part of Co. Louth. I will let him know about your message and possibly he can assist you.

  • Hi Tom

this unusual name is found in Louth and here are some in the 1820s http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp

An interesting site about Louth is here http://www.jbhall.freeservers.com/ Search your name and get a lot of hits.

It is late or early here now so I am off but will return, can you tell me were they RC or Protestant as church records are available for Darver. You are the 3rd query for this parish about this time in as many weeks.

I will add some more tomorrow evening.

    Regards

  • Hi Tom

had a look at the townlands (no actual town of Lurgan in Louth) but Lurgan is a prefix for a number of townlands and I think Lurgankeel is the most likely, there are a few Gernons there in the tithes link above.

If you require information on hotels or transport let me know or places to see but if you are planning to visit I think this is a must place, allow about 3 to 4 hours onsight, it is about 25 miles from Darver see http://www.newgrange.com/index.htm

If you like that kind of stuff of course.

  • Just found your post - I am also searching the name "Gernon" which has been almost entirely superceded by "Garland."  In my search I came across mention of gravestones at St. Michael's Old Cemetery, Parish of Darver, County Louth which includes names Garlon and Gernon.  My Gernon line was also from County Louth in 1804 and emigrated to Boston, MA in 1850.  Names in the family are Walter, Francis, Ann, Mary ("Bridget"), Michael and Margaret Gernon/Garland.

Hi Tom & Barbara, was answering another query on Gernon and found a piece in a book of which I photographed only a small portion but should give you a smile at least. The book is the History of Kilsaran Union of Parishes by a revd. Leslie only available in our library reference section, first published in 1903.

Castlebellingham was apparently previously called Gernonstown until circa 1700, useless if interesting information.
