Hello Turlough board members. I have narrowed my Henry Cassidy ancestor's birth place to Turlough Parish and would be glad of any information about his family if possible. Henry Cassidy was born in 1798 +- 5 years. His father was Patrick Cassidy and his mother was Ellen Grimes (or Eleanor Greames/Grahams, I've seen it spelled both ways). They had four children, Bernard, Henry, Patrick Jr., and Fanny(Frances). Possibly also a James. Fanny(Frances) was born about 1825+- 3yrs. in Ireland, probably also Mayo Co., Turlough Parish. The sons were all married in Canada between 1835-1842. I am not sure if Patrick and Ellen Cassidy left with them or stayed in Co. Mayo, Ireland. They were Roman Catholic, so would be buried in RC church cemetery. All of the sons and Fanny are buried in the USA. I'm thinking Patrick Cassidy and Ellen Grimes were married about 1795 but not sure where. It's also possible they stayed in Ireland and are buried in Mayo Co. He was born circa 1775+-5yrs. She also born about the same time period. They might have died before the children went to Canada around 1830ish. Any tidbit of information will be greatly appreciated, thank you Cathy

Hi Cathy
I didn't have any luck with the birth searching on www.rootsireland.ie/; there are a few Cassidy marriages & 1 baptism from Turlough/Parke RC but they are in the 1840's.
However I might have found Henry's grave:
I have a cd Memorials of the Dead Galway & Mayo and this was on it:
The faithful are
requested to pray
for the soul of
Henry Cassidy
who departed this
life May the 7th 1852 aged 60 yearsThe cemetery is Aughavale Old mayo.
There is also this one but it's from Ross Abbey, Galway:
Have mercy O Lord
on the soul of
Patk Cassidy
who died Novr 23rd 1906
aged 30 years
also his father
who died Jany 5th 1877
aged 38 years

Hello Col, thank you for your reply about my Cassidy ancestor search. My Henry Cassidy is buried in Owatonna, Minnesota. But he was born in Turlough, Co. Mayo. The grave information you found could be a close cousin however, If my Patrick (Henry's father) had a brother with a son he called Henry. The area is correct and the time period. I never thought of Henry as being an especially Irish name but it seems there were a lot of Henry Cassidys! It looks like your Henry died at the end of the Starvation years. I have been learning about the Starvation of Ireland on the site www.irishholocaust.org. What a terrible, dreadful thing to do to people. Luckily my ancestors escaped that tragedy before the worst of it. But it makes me that much more proud of my Irish heritage. Thank you again for your help, Cathy
