My great grandmother, Mary Tyne, was born around 1847 in Ballingarry, Tipperary, Ireland.  Her parents were Mary Lahert (Lahart, Laherty) and Edmond Tyne.

Mary Tyne (Tynan) married in 1870 in Templetouhy to James O'Neill who was born in Galmoy, Kilkenny in 1836.

Their daughter Mary was born in 1871 at Templetouhy.

The family apparently went to Nashville USA in approximately 1872/73 where James O'Neill's brother was said to have a hotel.  Another child, Delia, was born in America.  The family returned to Ireland and another son, Edmond, was born in 1876 at Ballingarry, with an address of Springfield.

The family emigrated to New Zealand from Plymouth in 1877.  They were named "Neal" on the ships manifest. James' occupation was a farm labourer and he was from Tipperary.

I have not been able to identify James O'Neill's parents nor I have not been able to verify the existence of siblings of James, although witnesses to the marriage and children's births include a Martin O'Neill and Catherine Tynan, and would be interested to find descendants.  Mary had several siblings, Margaret, born 1839, Ellen, born 1841, Cath born 1854, Judy born 1856, William Born 1845 and another brother who emigrated to America.

I have found no records verifying the family going to and from America, although the daughter who was born in America was always sure of that fact.  Would anyone know of any way to research emigration in the 1870's - too early for Ellis Island.

There is an 1836 baptism record in Tipperary for James with father Patrick but I couldn't find the Kilkenny one.

Hopefully someone else might have an idea about the emigration records - no luck on ancestry.

My husband's mother was a Tyne, from the Tyne family of Tipperary, specifically Gortnahoe Parish (aka New Birmingham/Thurles area).

My husband's great-great grandfather is John Tyne (born ca1820 @Foilecamen; died 1891@Oldtown, Co.Tipperary--tombstone @Sacred Heart Cemetery, Gortnahoe).  Our John Tyne was married to Ellen Lee (1834-1905) on 20 Nov 1851 at Gortnahoe, according to diocese records of Cashel & Emly.

I am attaching a scan of the original Gortnahoe parish records for 1851.  Their record is "20" under November. Here's my transcription of those 2 lines:  "20. John Tyne & Ellen Lee of Oldtown were married in presence of John & Judith Lee"  followed by scribbled signature of the priest? recorder?

Because of your connection to John Tyne & Ellen Lee, I am quite certain that your great-grandmother's parents are also the parents of Edmond Tyne, who emigrated to New York City in 1880 (oral records from USA Tyne family).  That family line produced my husband's mother within 2 generations (by 1920s).  This branch has remained in the NYC and New Jersey areas ever since.

I recently discovered that part of the family also emigrated to and settled in Nashville TN.

James Tyne & Catherine Healy (married @Ballingarry, Tipperary 1864) settled in Nashville TN (1870 US census), where James died sometime before 1880.  A few records name him as William James Tyne; some James W. Tyne.  He seems to stick with James W. in the US.   His son Thomas J. Tyne became a wealthy prominent citizen of Nashville during the early 20th century. I don't know about the O'Neill hotel, but James Tyne and his family were settled there and James was involved in constructing the first railroad bridge that crossed the Cumberland River at Nashville.  Newspaper records also show that he was involved in real estate transactions.  At that time in that part of the US, one could make a lot of money on land speculation and development. Perhaps James's sister Mary also had a part in their going to Nashville to try to make a living as her brother was doing well there.

As you have been able to trace one of the daughters of John & Ellen (Lee) Tyne, congratulations!  I would like to know more about the daughter Mary.  What I have is nothing more than her first name. John & Ellen (Lee) Tyne had 5 sons and 4 daughters according to my family source.  Information on any of the daughters is scant.

I can only give suggestions about emigrating to the US as that has been my focus.  There are U.S. records before Ellis Island. In general this site is a good place to look: http://www.archives.gov/research/immigration/passenger-arrival.html#col….  This is also good (part of same NARA site): http://www.archives.gov/research/immigration/#where.

https://aad.archives.gov/aad/series-list.jsp?cat=GP44  is the page on NARA's site where you will find a searchable database specifically for Irish immigrants to NYC during the famine.

It is often helpful to know which port or point of entry was used to get into the US as there were many.  Most, however, arrived through the port of New York.

If any of this is useful, happy hunting!

  • Thank you so much for the information on the Tyne family.  I have only just discovered it so apologise for not responding sooner.  I shall follow up the immigration links you provided for the US.  I am very interested to see James Tyne and his wife settled in Nashville.  That may give me a lead in verifying whether our Mary Tyne and James O'Neill went to join them, rather than an O'Neill.  I have discovered a lot more about the Tynes, and will write again when I have verified a couple of things.

  • I have discovered, from Mary Tyne (O'Neill) death certificate that her parents were Edmond Tyne and Mary Lehart - not John Tyne and Ellen Lee.  Further research into that link has me more inclined to think we had the wrong Mary Tyne - we had received that information from the Tipperary Family History people, back in 2002.  On the information available in 2002, it did seem like the correct Mary Tyne.

I have found a civil death record for a Mary Tyne, who died on 31 May 1886 aged 34 - which could possibly be John Tyne and Ellen Lee's Mary.  I did notice that there was a Mary Tyne referred to on the tombstone at Sacred Heart cemetery at Gortnahoe, which you referred me to, and which I saw on a visit to that area a couple of years ago.

It is somewhat difficult finding ancestors when they all had such common names.

Thank you for this new information.  I will look closer at my Tyne records and make adjustments as needed.

We have been plagued with severe winter storms--just in time for spring--so I don't have research time these days.  However, I am going over the online Gortnahoe records very carefully as time permits.  If I find other relevant Tyne information, I will post again.

  •   Hi, I have been sorting out and separating the information I have of Mary Tyne (daughter of John Tyne and Ellen Lee - who I thought was my great grandmother) and of Mary Tyne, daughter of Edmond Tyne and Mary Lahert (who I now believe is my great grandmother).

I foud a baptism record in the Ireland Catholic Parish Registers for Mary Tyne, baptised on 9 November 1851 at Gortnahoe, father John Tyne and mother Ellen Lee.  Their residence was Oldtown.  The copy of the register states "Mary (illegitimate) of John Tyne and Ellen Lee Oldtown".

When I was researching the John Tyne/Ellen Lee family, I came across 3 daughters (Mary baptised 9.11.1851, Judith, baptised 9/4/1854 and Ellen, Oldtown, baptised 12/12/1868, and 4 sons John Baptised 25/10/1856, Thomas, baptised 24/5/1859, Edmond, baptised 6/5/1862, William, baptised 9/7/1864 and Michael, baptised 29/9/1866.  I had not verified any of these.

The Mary Tyne who married James O'Neill was said to already have family in New Zealand when Mary and James arrived.  I have tracked down lots of NZ Tynes, and some of the names match those of children of Edmond Tyne and Mary Lahert, and correspond with some of the names my mother recollected as being Aunts.

  • Thank you so much for the baptism info on children of John Tyne and Ellen Lee.

My family sources' data mostly match the dates you have found. Generally, I have only the years; so it is good to fill in the months and days of baptisms.  From that I can approximate a more exact birthday. The total you have is actually 5 sons, which is the number I have.  One son (John) doesn't match what I have for the year of birth; family member wrote 1868, and said baby John died in 1869.  It may be that there was more than one son John because that is the father's name. Edmond, is the son who is most important for our family because he emigrated ca.1880 to New York City and is the source of our family line of Tynes. He is my husband's maternal great-grandfather. The US Federal Census for 1900, 1910 and 1920 show him progressing in business for himself from "grains keeper" to owner of his own grocery stores, first in Manhattan and later in Queens.

If you know anything about a school at Ballysloe (New Birmingham, Clonora, Co, Tipperary) or how I might find records/information about that school, please let me know.  Edmond Tyne went to that school.  I would be most interested in learning about it.  However much or little education he got there, he certainly put that to good use in his future in NYC.

    Best Wishes ~ Susan

Mary McKeough, the sister of my 2x great grandfather John McKeough was  bapised in Thurles in 1830. She married Michael Morris in 1848 at Lanchester, County Durham England. Mixhael was bapised in 1829 at Killenaule and was the son of Edmond Morris and Catherine Tyne. Catherine was born in 1812 in Gortnahoe and was the daughter of Edmond Tyne and Judith Furlong.  i thought this information might be helpful.
