I have traced my familyto Athenry and I have found my 2nd great grandfather, John Mannion in Griffiths in South Gloves and Esker.
I know my great grandfather, John Mannion was born between 1843 and 1847, but there are no parish records until 1858. I did find his father's second and third marriages, to Mary Mogan and Bridget Howard, and the birth of those last 6 children who all emigrated to Australia in 1883 with Bridget and John (2nd great grandfather) who died 12 days after arrival), but I would like to be able to place the family on either townland and I also have notes that there were 5 children from the first marriage, my great grandfather John, Thomas and Bridget who followed him to Boston and Mary and Catherine who I cannot find, but I think they may have stayed in Ireland.
I have been to Dublin and done research, but it was through a DNA match on Ancestry that I found well documented records from the Australian cousins which led my from somewhere in Galway to Athenry..
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Judy Mannion

Judy:
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
When were the marriages of John Mannion to Mary Mogan and Bridget Howard? I assumed they were 1864 or later but I have not been able to find any record on the civil marriage index records?

Thank you for getting back to me so promptly Roger.
John Mannion married Margaret (sorry for the name mix-up) Mogan 26 Nov 1859 in the Parish of Kiltullagh. They had a son Michael Mannion 29 Sept 1860, baptised in Athenry (it looks like Northgate). I have parish register entries for these. Also a parish register entry for John Mannion's marriage to Bridget Ward (although she said Howard) on 18 Feb 1867 in Athenry..
I couldn't find any civil registrations for these, or a parish record for Margaret, born 2 Mar 1865, but I did find a Civil REgistration for her.

It looks like he went between Athenry and Kiltullagh, but unfortunately the records of the fist 5 children, my great grandfather and his sisters and brothers were not in the Kiltullagh records, so they must have been baptised in Athenry. I wish I had the dates of these baptisms and a firm name for his mother. He said her name was Honoria Conneely, but his brother said, Connella and Kennedy at different times. I think that the people here wiritng down what they said on the marriage registers took little time with the names and could not understand the Irish very well and did not care. Plus, they could not read or write which made it difficult.
My great grandfather John Mannion had a farm of over 100 acres, purchased about 10 years after he came to Massachusetts and never stated that he could read or write on a census. He certainly understood math though!
One more piece of information, The family stated that Margaret Mannion was from Blean, Athenry on her death cert. in Australia.
Thank you for your time,
Judy Mannion
It was certainly a large family, 3 wives and 11 children.

One more piece of information.
I found a Thomas Mannion (John's father's name) in the Tithe Book for about 1823 in South Gloves.
