SHEPPARD/YATES family immigrated to Canada in 1824, arriving in Quebec City. Looking for any family in Killoughy area. William Yates married Ann Sheppard in Birr in abt. 1818. When they left Killoughy in May 1824 their two year old son Richard was with them, he was buried in Quebec shortly after they arrived in Canada. The family was Church of Ireland.
William Yates states on the burial record that he had been a weaver in Killoughy before he left Ireland.
Any help would be appreciated. Pam Yates Moughton

My apologies for the very late response. Have you managed to learn anymore about these ancestors? The period of the search is very early and RC parish records for Birr do not begin until 1838. Find my Past may have some references to the 'weaver' aspect of the family in one of their directories.
Best wishes

Clare, thank you for responding. You will note the parish records are Church of Ireland, i.e. Shinrone. In a diary brought to Canada with the Sheppard brothers it states that the parish clergy agreed to a family plot in the Shinrone cemetery in 1835. It is written in the hand of one of the brothers who later came to Canada. I visited the cemetery but could not locate the plot and saw no headstones with the Sheppard name of them. I did have Ennclan research the weaver records to no avail. I would like to find out if that plot is still there in the Sheppard name, and if anyone is buried there. How can I find that? The diary also states a brother died at the Battle of Althone in the late 1600s. Any help would be appreciated. Pam

Hi Pam
It is likely that there is no headstone or if there was it may have been damaged and eroded over the years. Many families placed a stone marker on the grave and the details of those who were buried there are probably not recorded anywhere unfortunately. I have asked a local volunteer to confirm
Best wishes

Thank you. Here is the citation in the family diary: 'Ät a vestry held in the Church of Shinrone on the 21st of April 1835 it was settled that the burrying ground from the outside of Cornet Higham Toome stone to the thru at the wall including the ground under theToome stone belongs to teh Sheppard Family in presence of the Rev M Savage. " Signed by Isarel Sheppard. Note: The writing of description Cornet is a little unclear.

I am also related to this Sheppard family through the Shortt family. I have quite a few Sheppards in my tree. (although I'm not a direct descendant). I wonder though if you might also be a descendant of the Shortt family. William Shortt b 1739 married Mary Shortt. In a latter generation in Ontario a Charles Sheppard also married a Harriet Amelia Shortt. So there are close links with both families. Have you had a DNA genealogy test done? Might be worth comparing as I have had a test.
Kind regards,

Hi,
Sheppard connection here too. I have done some research into Sheppards around that area, and North Tipperary.
Have you looked at any Quaker records?
My email address is barrysheppard77@gmail.com, I'd be happy to pass on what I have.
Thanks

Hello, We have traced my family surname of Killoughey back to appx. 1857 near Tubberclare but no further back as far as I have heard. My cousin James Gorman (related to Earleys) was doing the work. My records are stored away. What I recall is that several of the Killoughey children + a parent emigrated from Cobh in 1895. My dad John Joseph MIchael (borh 1911) grew up in Chicago. HIs sister was named Honora. Donna M. Killoughey
