I am looking at coming to Ireland for 3 weeks in Sept/Oct this year and would like to find out information about my ancestors. I have so far researched back to my 2nd great-grandfather and great-grandmother Thomas Kavanagh born (1831?). He married Anne Malone born (1832?) in Freshford (Irish Catholic Parish Registers 1799-1877 page 79 of 96) 26 Jan 1854

They had 3 children all baptised in Parish: Freshford   Diocese: Ossory    County: Kilkenny

Thomas (baptised 25 Mar 1855 page 38)                                                                                                                    Bridget( baptised 27 Sept 1856 page45)

Richard (baptised 11 Mar 1858 page 53).

They then appear on Ship records "Hamilla Mitchell" leaving Plymonth 14 Jan 1859 arriving Perth, Western Australia 6 April 1859. But only with Thomas & Richard. I can't find death records for Bridget anywhere. They then went on to have 6 more children one of them my 1st great grandfather Robert Kavanagh.

Through Ancestry, Find my Past and others I have been led to believed Thomas Kavanagh's parents maybe Atty Kavanagh & Margaret Campion (linking witnesses on baptism records of Thomas's children) but I can find no record of them except for a baptism record of a Thos Kavanagh for (2 June 1831) in Parish: Johnstown Diocese" Ossory County:Kilkenny. Only thing there were about 5 Thomas Kavanagh born in area between 1829-1833.

Anne Malone was I believe baptised in Freshford on 19 June 1832 (page 118) Father Richard Malone and Mother Bridget Phelan. They were married 1 March 1824 in Freshford.

Any information anyone can help me with would be most appreciated. As I said I am coming to Ireland in Sept/Oct and will be in Kilkenny for a week, then hopefully onto Cork for a week and who knows a week in maybe county Clare.

Look forward to hearing from anyone.

Thanks

Jullia

  • Jullia,

Regarding Bridget Kavanagh’s death, statutory death registration only began in Ireland in 1864 so if she died in the period 1856 – 1859 in Ireland, there won’t be a statutory record. And since most RC parishes didn’t keep burial records there’s unlikely to be a church record either. So probably no record of her death or burial, unless she happens to have a gravestone. However the majority of the population at that time couldn’t afford gravestones so that’s unlikely too.

  • Hi Elwyn,

I'm making a bit of a mess of this replying. Did another whole post, but have figured out now. As I said I thought that may be the case. Anyway if you can find out anything else for me as to Mary or Thomas parents, or relatives that would be helpully.

    Thanks so much
