I'm looking to learn more about the families of my 2xGreat Grandparents,John GRIFFIN and Ellen O'KEEFE.John was baptised in 1804 in Clonoulty Parish, the son of John GRIFFIN and Mary KENNEDY.He had 2 siblings that I  found in the Irish Catholic Parish Registers; Patrick,bap.1807,and Margaret,"Peggy",bap.1809,who married Michael Quinlan from the same county, (and possibly parish.) They emigrated to Australia ,and she  died in Kilmore,Victoria in 1896.John Griffin married Ellen O'Keefe,bap.1811 in Cahir Parish,South Tipperary, the daughter of Michael O'Keefe and Mary Fennessy.Ellen and John married C1840 before emigrating to  Port Phillip, now Melbourne,Victoria,Australia, arriving in Dec.1841 on the "Gilmore" with their 7 week old daughter,Johannah, born on the voyage out to Australia. They settled in Kilmore,Victoria, had 6 more children, and were one of the many Irish  pioneering families in the area .I would love to learn more about the lives of this  GRIFFIN  family in Clonoulty Parish in  Tipperary.

  • Hi Magicmarg,  There were only nine families of Griffins in the barony of Kilnamanagh lower on Griffiths valuation.  Allwere in the Catholic parishes of Clonoulty/Rossmore,  civil parishes Clogher and Clonoulty. John  and Michael in Cloneyross,  Two Johns in Glenough , and James in Turraheen. I  did some research on the Family in Turraheen  some years ago,  They emigrated to Iowa with other families from the are in 1855.

Will try and find out more about them and get back to you.

    Christina.

  • Dear Christina,

    Many thanks for your reply.

I have found the baptismal records for John Griffin and Ellen O'Keefe on the Irish Catholic Parish Registers ;I only found John's a week ago,but it was very exciting as I have looked for his baptism/birth date for a long time.Ellen's was quite easy to find,on Roots Ireland.

The time frame for these is a bit earlier than Griffiths, the baptisms were 1804,and 1811,and they emigrated in 1841,I think when they emigrated their parents were quite possibly deceased,so the Griffiths Valuation records are not completely accurate for them.

    Many thanks for your help.

    Margot.
