Hi, I am trying to find information on my Great grandmother Mary Lee who came over to New Zealand with her parents and siblings on the ship Zealandia in 1874 as assisted immigrants. Mary was around the age of 10 at the time as she was born on the 10th May, 1864, Tulla District, Clare. Her parents were John Frank Lee ( John and Bridget Lee nee Heming) and Mary nee Collins ( Capt. Collins and Margaret Collins nee Doyle )

I would like to find out more about Mary and her parents/grandparent esp. Capt Collins from Clare, Ireland as to what nature his Captain title held and to find his out his first name etc.

I think her parents got married in Dungannon, Tyrone and they had 10 children, 8 whom were born in Ireland and two in N.Z.

I have found all of their burial sites in N.Z and have got their death certificates.

If there was an off-chance that there was still living descendents from the Lee, Collins, Heming or Doyle sides it would be great to be able to make contact with them.

Regards, Gail Rosevear

  • Hi Gail: Many thanks or your query to Ireland Reaching Out.

    The marriage entry on the Tulla parish register for Mary Collins & John Lee is here:

    http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634806#page/131/mode/1up.  &nb…; As to Mary's father being a Captain, it is possible that he was a soldier or part of a police force.  You can search through online resource at the Clare Library website. There is no marriage entry for a Margaret Doyle to a Collins in Tulla.  It would appear that Captain Collins may have been stationed in Tulla or nearby in barracks.  You might take a look at the Collins' names that appear in Tulla village in the 1901 Census.  Some of these names may match your ancestors.  Here is the link:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Clare/Tulla/Tulla/.&nb…;

    Here is another link for you for a James Collins headstone in Tulla.  It appears that he would have been born about 1840.  Let me know if this is a match.

    Happy Easter!

  • Hi Jane,

    Thanks for replying so quickly. I went in and printed out page 131 of the record of John Lee and Mary Collins marriage and also found a Ralph and Mary Collins in the 1901 census but I'm not sure if they are related or not. It had written on the form that the couple couldnt read and I know John and Mary couldn't read or write either as I have John Lee's Will and it was signed with a cross. Their children were the first to have schooling in Hunterville and I have heard through another relative that she was told they were farm labourers. This is why I presumed Captain Collins was perhaps a Captain of a boat used for fishing etc but I could be on the wrong track.... Thanks again, Gail Rosevear.
