Hello,
My husband's great great grandmother was Ellen Gaskin, born about 1830. Her gravestone lists her place of birth as Linkardstown. She emigrated about 1850 to Oyster Bay, N.Y., where she married John Johnson, of Leighlinbridge about 1854.
There was another Gaskin family living in Oyster Bay near Ellen--Thomas Gaskin and his wife Ann. It is quite possible that Ellen and Thomas were brother and sister (or cousins).
I have been unable to find any Irish records on this family, and would appreciate any help or advice.
Thanks so much,
Linda Miklich, Denver Colorado

Linda,
Griffiths Valuation for 1853 lists a Patrick Gaskin in Linkardstown. He had plot 4b which was a labourer’s cottage on James Dowling’s farm. Presumably related to your family.

No Gaskins living there by 1901:

The townland falls within the RC parish of Tinryland. Their baptism and marriage records start in 1806 and are on-line on the NLI site: http://registers.nli.ie/parishes

Thanks to both of you! The age of the Ellen you found, Col, is very very close. She always listed 1830 as her DOB.
Perhaps Thomas Gaskin was a cousin. Ellen's family and Thomas's family had farms in Oyster Bay, Long Island, that were practically next to each other. Seems to be too big of a coincidence that they wouldn't be related somehow.
Is the town of Ellen's baptism close to Linkardstown? Linkardstown was designated on her tombstone as her place of birth.
I am very grateful for your time.

Hi Linda, I am a new volunteer with this site and I am from County Carlow where your ancestor came from. The 1901 census shows a number of Gaskins (namely 3 families) living in this area and that information can be obtained by going to the Nation Census and putting in Gaskin under name. The 1911 census show less people now living there. The area they all live in is the same parish and within minutes of each other and to Linkardstown. It is worth looking at. Also there is a very famous Gaskin in the area at the moment who is a champion squash player. If you google Gaskin and Carlow together you will find out more...........hope this helps.........Graiguegirl

Hi Linda. My 3 x great grandfather is Michael (born in Tinryland) to Patrick and Mary (Murphy). I visited the location a few days ago and the Linkardstown graveyard. I think your husband’s ancestor, Ellen, was the sister of Michael. I’ve got more details written down but before I send any please let me know if you still need any more information. Michael moved to Liverpool. Interesting to see that others moved to New Zealand. Did they choose to move to New Zealand of their own free-will, I wonder?! Kind regards. Vicky Gaskin.

Hello, Vicky
I would be delighted to receive any information at all about the Gaskin family. Unfortunately, we know almost nothing about Ellen.
She wound up in Oyster Bay, NY. Then she moved to Queens. She is buried in Holy Rood Cemetery in Bethpage, on Long Island.
There was also a Thomas Gaskin living in Oyster Bay contemporaneously, but I cannot show a familial relationship.
