I posted in June 2014 and received some replies. I am returning with more information and am still looking for my family home. I have had my DNA tested and have been matched to a 3rd cousin related by Bridget Mannion and a 3rd cousin related by Martin Mannion. Also to two 3rd or 4th cousins on the Walsh side of my grandmother's family. I believe the two Walsh relations are Michael Walsh and James J. Walsh. A death certificate for Michael Walsh lists his parents as David Walsh and Catherine Malloy. I have found a 1901 census record for Michael listing a Catherine as his mother. This record is for house 2 in Croaghrim, Cloonbur, Galway. My great grandmother was Mary Walsh Mannion. I have been unable to find a marriage record for Thomas Mannion and Mary Walsh. I believe that the 1901 census for a house 34 in Cloughbrack Upper and/or the 1911 house 22 in Cloghbrack, Upper is/are my families records.
My son and I will be visiting Galway in early October this year to look for my roots. Can someone identify some RC churches and cemeteries we can visit? Would it be helpful for us to visit the IrelandXO office?
Regards,
Mary Clifford Cobb

Mary:
Welcome back to Ireland Reaching Out!
What was the title of your June 2014 message so we can see the prior replies?
Here is a link to St. Patrick's church in Clonbur. http://www.tuamarchdiocese.org/parish-details/?parishID=9
Their young pastor, Fr. Micheal Mannion died suddenly a few months ago.

I wrote on 14 Feb. 2014 and 18 June 2014 Looking for Mannion Family relatives both times. Received replies both times and continued looking. Have found a few points but still looking. Thank you for the links and any other information that can be shared. Mary

Hi Mary
I had a look at the cd Memorials of the Dead Galway & Mayo and found that there are quite a few Walsh graves in Galway; the early ones are in Ballyconneely which is now closed; those with several are: Cloughmore, Goruma, Moycullen Old, Moycullen R C, Oughterad Old, Ross Abbey & Spiddal.
There aren't many Mannions I'm afraid: Errislannan & Lettermullen have 1 or 2.
Details: Cloughmore: This graveyard is beside the sea about a half a mile west of Lough Nagravin.
Moycullen: The present church was built in 1953 and incorporates three 19th century memorials. The graveyard took over from Moycullen Old, about a mile to the east, and the first burials date from the 1830s.
Oughterard Old: The graveyard is about a mile south of Oughterard village.
Ross Abbey This graveyard is not to be confused with Ross Abbey, one mile west of Headford.
Spiddal: This graveyard is the biggest in western County Galway; (no directions given).
Errislannan: This badly overgrown graveyard is near the village
Lettermullen: This graveyard is on the eastern end of Lettermullen island close to the bridge from Gorumna island.

Mary:
We get a lot of Mannion messages. I did go back and found out that I had worked on the February 2014 message. The June 2014 message had a reply from another researcher and she mentioned a Rosshill cemetery in Clonbur. This may be the same cemetery as Ross Abbey that Col mentioned in his response. I would Google the cemetery and see what you can find.

Hi,
The Thomas Mannion listed at no 34 in 1901, aged 20, matches with the Baptism record in Cloonbur/Ross, April 1880. The record is not very clear / incomplete. Thos of Thos (Mannion) & Mary Walsh, Mannion is omitted but date matches with Civil registration. The townland is a variation of Dooghta, Cong. Hi - I just came across this post and am curious if the original poster came to any conclusions upon visiting Galway? I am also looking for Walsh relatives in the area. My great grandmother (Nora or Norah Walsh) was one of the daughters of Mary Comer Walsh and John Walsh. Nora emigrated to the U.S. (Boston) and married a Shields. Upon her death, 2 of her young childred (Katherine Shields and Thomas Shields) were sent to Connemara to live with Walsh relatives. I have been told that these 2 children lived with their bachelor uncle (Martin Walsh) until they returned to Boston. I'm interested in learning if there are any living relatives still in the area. I believe Martin Walsh died in 1977.

Hi Novagirl,
My Walsh family was from Milpark, Clonbur, Co. Galway. My great grandmother was Mary Walsh Mannion. She had several sisters, one named Honor. Sometimes Honor became Nora. However the baptism record for Honor was 4 Sept. 1860 and lists her father as Patt Walsh and mother as Mary Walsh.
If you have access to Ancestry my tree is public and you can see it as Clifford(Scanlon)/Driscoll Family Tree. If you look at Mary Walsh 1854 - 1944 and look at her siblings section you can find Honor. If you click on Honor you can see her information and see a copy of her baptism record. I could not read the first name for the sponsors but the second was Nappy Walsh.

Mary - thanks for your reply. I took a look at your tree - it's impressive. Do you think that Patt Walsh could be a brother of John Walsh? In my tree, I have his parents as Rose Brennan and Michael Walsh.

Hi again, They may have been brothers or cousins, however the person that was helping me with my Walsh family did have any further information that what I have found. Have been concentrating on my father's paternal ancestry lately. Will have to get back to his maternal side to look for Walsh's.
