My antecedent James Gorman 1807-5/1/1885 arrived in New South Wales on the SS Blenheim in 1839. He was tried in Tipperary, and, convicted of grievous assault. 

I am reasonably certain as to the birth year as his age is stated on his transportation records and death certificate. A family researcher says he is from Inch. James committed his crime in Moyne and was tried at Tipperary. It is reported in the Clonmel Herald Wednesday 19 March 1834. He seems to have been an itinerant labourer at the time of the crime. I do not know if he was married.

I have checked the Irish Times website for where surnames occur and have found searching the online birth records, including findmypast, to be inconclusive, so need to narrow down a location.

I would be grateful for any information on Gormans in Inch during the 1800s.

    There are no Gormans in Tipp in the 1851 irish Census - the only 1 Tipperary is mentioned in before 1901.

    There are 292 Gormans in Tipp in the Tithe Applotments (free at titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/) 1826-7 including 6 in Inch

  • Hi, thankyou for the above response. It seems the records for this parish are not available early enough for James. I now have some new information, a potential sister for James http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Gorman-1073
    I recently visited the Bathurst area of NSW where the property Ballyroe probably was. James was a convict assigned to Major Roger Murphy there from late 1830s-1840s. Having seen how remote this area is, even today, confirms for me something that I have been trying to establish. Johanna Russell, nee Gorman 1812/17 Ireland-1852 NSW, lived on a neighbouring farm. 

    Are you able to provide any information on Johanna Gorman 1812/17 Ireland-1852 NSW. If she is James' sister Inch should be her birthplace.

    Her marriage records show that on 27 April 1841 Johanna, resident at Bally Roe married Michael Russell at Saint Mary's Church Sydney. The witnesses were James Gorman and Bridget Hogan. While the marriage was registered in Sydney it may have taken place in the Bathurst district. Ballyroe, owned by Major Roger Murphy, is remote even today. I think the fact that Johanna went to Ballyroe where James was assigned strongly suggests that they are related, most likely siblings or cousins. 

    I have not definitively established when she arrived in Australia, but the timing leads me to the: Johanna Gorman (1817) who arrived as a bounty immigrant on the Glenswilly 11 March 1841. It would have taken several days to travel from Sydney to Ballyroe. A very quick courtship!

    I believe the mother's surname variation is due to either mis-transcription or misspelling so possible siblings.
