Hello,

My Great Grandfather was Peter Briody, born in 1869 in Kinaleck, (Belles Grove).  His parents were Patrick Briody and Rose Neale, (also recorded as Neil and O'Neill).  Peter's siblings were Julia and Michael Briody.

Hoping to connect with anyone who can share information on the above families.

Best wishes from Canada!

Lilian

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I located the 1901 census in Bellsgrove in Ballymachugh civil parish for Rose and daughter Julia and son Michael. Rose died in 1904 and Michael was shown with his new wife and his sister in the 1911 census. Looks like Michael married Julia Smith in 1909. I also looked at the online Irish phone book and there were Briodys near Kilnaleck although none were in Bellsgrove. Make sure you use the Residential Tab when you search.

  • Hello Roger,

Many thanks for your reply and the information/links.  I've had no luck finding any further information on the births of Patrick Briody and Rose Neale, or their marriage, so if you have any thoughts on where I could look I would be grateful?

I've wondered if they originally came from another area, or even county?  Their son, my Great Grandfather, Peter Briody ended up living in Thomastown, Co Kilkenny, where he died in 1948, aged 79.

I did send an email message to one Briody in the Kilnaleck area, who owned a business but did not receive a reply. I also telephoned another and received a rather curt response, so I'm hesitant about calling them from Canada as they appear very suspicious of someone contacting them from outside the country. Likely because all of the scams going around.

I imagine a local family history society is my best option at this stage and perhaps church records as they were all Roman Catholics?

Many thanks again and very best wishes from Canada!

Our system went down Friday and did not come up until this morning. baptThe RC records for Crosserlough start in 1843 for baptisms and 1868 for marriages   http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0826   I searched on Roots Ireland and did not find a Patrick Briody baptismal record in Crosserlough in the 1840s. There were Patrick Briody records in other parishes but without knowing his parents names, there is no way to confirm any record. I did not find a Rose Neale baptismal record and also did not find a marriage record.

  • Many tanks again Roger,

I think I need to find his marriage to Rose Neale, (or alternate spelling of her last name), then I may get an idea of where they were from.  One person thought they may come from the area of Ballymachugh but apart from other Briody's in the area, one being a Patrick born around 1834, there's nothing firm that supports that.

I'll have to keep plugging away and maybe one day I'll find the marriage then possibly go from there.

    Best wishes from Canada!
