Hi Laura
Welcome
Patrick's parents were Patrick Ryan and Ellen Neil / Neal and they lived in Ballyanna / Ballyana Galbally .. Patrick jnr appears to be one of the younger children .
Mary 24 Mar 1811
Patrick 15 Nov 1813 - he obviously died and Patrick 1823 named as per the norm
John 11 Sept 1819
I am sure if we continued browsing the register we would find more
There are still Ryan's in Ballyanna and though I am unable to meet and greet you in September I can email you a map to the house and help you research those who stayed behind

Dear Cordangan,
I would really appreciate a map to the house. Is this the house Patrick Ryan would have lived in?
I believe I have found other siblings for Patrick 1823;
another John Dec 1826, who died Dec 1898 in Iowa, USA
Michael born about 1828
I would like to discover any lving relatives so I am looking at the line of Mary Catherine Ryan 24 Mar 1811 - 11 Dec 1868
and Michael born about 1828.
Can you help me? I will be in your area 26 Sept.
Thank you!
Laura

The Ryan farms in Ballyana are still in descendants hands - just ask in Galbally village and someone will give you directions . They are buried in Galbally graveyard but I am not sure if earlier headstones still stand
Enjoy your trip

Laura,
My name is Mary Ann (Ryan) Sgroi. Patrick Ryan (1823-1903) is my gg-grandfather. I am so excited that I found your posts! I hope you get my post as I have so many questions!
How are you related to Patrick Ryan? Did you find the Patrick Ryan family home? Did you find family tombstones? Have you seen the tombstone for Patrick and Mary Ann (listed as Anna on the tombstone) in the St. Lawrence Cemetery in Otter Creek, Iowa? Are you in Iowa?

Hi Mary Ann,
I am so glad you wrote me. Patrick Ryan is my 3rd g grandfather. I am descended through his oldest child, Mary Jane(1851 -1941) who married James Slattery.
I didn't get a chance to search for Patrick's home while we were in Ireland but I did get to drive throught the area. What an amazing feeling to be where our ancestors lived.
I have a photo of Patrick's tombstone but haven't been there. I grew up in Iowa and my mom grew up in the Dubuque area. I will be back there this summer for a reunion and plan to do some local research at that time. Do you live in Iowa?
I have been searching for quite a while to get more family info on Patrick and his parents and siblings. Hie baptism record lists his parents as Patrick Ryan and Ellen Neille. I believe I have found some siblings, only one of which stayed in Ireland; Mary Catherine Ryan (1811-1868) married Samuel Jones.

Hi, Laura!!!
Thank you so much for responding to my message!
I do live in Iowa. My full name is Mary Ann (Ryan) Sgroi. I was born in Dubuque and lived there for about 23 years, moved to the Los Angeles area where I met my husband Frank, and moved back to Iowa (Marion) after our son Michael was born. I am descended through John Ryan, Mary Jane Slattery's brother. In fact, I have two obituaries for my great-grandfather John Ryan which mention your gg-grandmother. I'll attach them to this message if I can.
Did your family know Melvin and Donna Slattery? My parents were friends with them and my Dad worked with Melvin at Celotex in Dubuque. I just checked and Melvin's grandparents were Michael and Julia (Ryan) Slattery. Julila would've been a sister to Mary Jane Slattery. Did you know there are Slatterys buried at St. Aloysius Church in South Garryowen, Iowa? Have you been there?
Also, in your search for ancestors, have you encountered Christine Chorostecki? She would be a distant cousin of ours who is also interested in the Ryan family tree. She is the great granddaughter of Thomas Ryan, a brother of John Ryan and Mary Jane Slattery. The reason I mention her is because she has an ancestry.com account showing Patrick Ryan's siblings, John and Michael; however, she has them listed as half-brothers. And she has as a source an Iowa census report showing Michael living with his brother Patrick and Patrick's young family.
Also, Laura, the tombstone for Patrick, Mary Ann (Anna) and their son Henry is relatively new. I believe it was put up within the last 15 or 20 years. I've tried to locate whoever was responsible for it as they may know more about our ancestors but haven't been successful.
I think it's wonderful that you were able to visit the area in Ireland where our ancestors lived! My husband and I are hoping someday to visit Ireland as well since we both have Irish heritage.
Mary Ann
