Searching for parish and home of G Grandparents Daniel & Catherine (nee Beryman/Berryman) Morris.

1821 Irish census records a Daniel Morris, 6 (b ca 1815), Townland Irvinestown, Parish Derryvullan, County Fermanagh; parents: Eleanor b ca 1781 & Daniel b ca 1766, siblings John, b ca 1803, Ann b ca 1810, & Jane b ca 1821.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Cork and Ross, County Cork, recorded that a Daniel Morris married Catherine Berryman in 1840 but identified no parish, according to 16 volume "Index of O'Kief, Coshe Mange, Slieve Lougher and Upper Blackwater in Ireland", authored by Albert Eugene Casey, Eleanor L. Downey-Prince, and Ursula Dietrich.

1860 US Census shows 2 daughters born in Ireland about 1845 & 1849 & 2 boys in New York City about 1853 & 1858, so they immigrated about 1850-52. The only Dan & Kate arriving together in Irish Immigration books is Danl Morris, 32, farmer (implies b ca 1819) and Kate Morris 30 farmer (implies b ca 1821). They arrived in New York in ship Jessica on 13 November 1851, but Jessica did not list daughters Elisabeth & Mary Ann. The family was in New York City for 1860, 70 & 80 US censuses.

1860 US Census            Gender    Age        Birthplace & Implied Year

Daniel Morris                     M            40           Ireland b ca 1820 (1880 census implies b ca 1817)

Catherine Morris              F              41           Ireland b ca 1819

Elisabeth Morris               F              15           Ireland b ca 1845

Mary Ann Morris              F              11           Ireland b ca 1849

Daniel Morris                     M            7             New York b ca 1853 (my Grandfather)

Alex Morris                         M            2             New York b ca 1858

Daniel Morris’s (b ca 1815) son Daniel’s (b ca 1853) 1882 New York marriage certificate shows parents Daniel and Catherine Beryman Morris. Family included Protestants & Catholics. Daniel was a printer like James Gormely and they boarded together in New York City in the US 1880 census. James married Daniels's sister Elizebeth 3/31/1875 in New York. James H. (perhaps from his Mom, Teresa Hurley) Gormely witnessed Dan Jr.'s 1882 marriage to Henrietta Donovan in New York, NY; E. Gormely witnessed Daniel & Catherine's child’s 1883 baptism.

  • Dear Alex

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I haven't been able to locate a marriage for Daniel and Catherine nor baptisms for any children. I searched too the Early Birth and Marriage Index without luck. This is a source you should keep an eye on as it is update regularly. It may be the case that they were married in a parish and at a time that pre-dated parish records.

Have you done any research on the Gormley side to see if finding their parish will point to Daniel's? Did James Gormley marry for example?

    Best wishes

  • I have tried the Gormely a little with no results on immigration, census but need to do more. I thought maybe the E. Gormley who signed Dan's child's baptism certificate in the 1880s might be Dan's sister Elizabeth, b 1845 in Ireland, but no success yet. Maybe next time I visit NYC's archives....  In 2014, I spent time in the Dublin's archives with no luck even with their help; microfilms were very hard to read. Family History Center in Utah also tried but sans luck.
