Hello from Minnesota! I am searching for JANES and MACKEN. I have searched high and low in the U.S. for any information which will show where in Ireland my ancestors came from, but to no avail. Since JANES is not a common surname I decided to see if I could find them in close proximity in Ireland...
Francis JANES b abt 1822 married Mary Jane MACKEN who was born abt 1825. They married abt 1845.They emigrated to U.S. around 1850, settled in Staten Island in N.Y.C. Had daughter Mary Jane abt 1847, possibly in Ireland. In the U.S. they attended an Episcopalian church. Francis JANES' burial record from 1885 says his father's name was also Francis and his mother was Fanny. Mary Jane MACKEN's parents were John and Margaret.
I have searched Griffith's and the Tithe applottment records for JANES and MACKEN (and variant spellings of both surnames including McCann). JANES are non-existent in Griffith's Valuation but JANES and MACKENs both appear in the Tithe Applotment in County Clare.
JANES appears in Townland of Kilmanahin in Kilmanaheen Parish (No first name) which is adjacent to Kilmacrehy Parish where the following are living:
Michael MACKEN appears in Townland of Ballyrislaun in Kilmacrehy Parish.
Michael MACKEN appears in Townland of Ballynaslaney in Kilmacrehy Parish.
Anyway, if anyone has any information about JANES and MACKEN's I would be eternally grateful! And of course I am happy to share any and all information I have about them living here in the U.S!

I have done autosomal testing with Familytreedna but no connections so far.
In what records did you find the Janes' in Meath and Westmeath??
The only resource I have recently found Janes (and variants) in were in the Tithe. But late last night I was on the Co. Clare library site and found 4 Jannes in Griffith's which is a variant I hadn't thought of or seen earlier.
Yesterday I mapped all the Janes' and Mackens in their corresponding Parishes in Louth, Clare and Cork, looking for, and finding crossover, and all the MACKEN' in parishes elsewhere. Actually, I did a search years ago on Griffiths for JAMES and MACKENS and there was a Francis James renting from a Margaret MACKEN in Newcastle in County Down. With further research turns out his name was really JANNS, he was in the RIC, never married, and moved to the Clare area where he died. I thought I had found my ancestors' area. I hired a genealogist who found no evidence of any other Janes there.
Today I am going to our Irish Genealogical Society's library in St. Paul where we have Townland maps for each Parish and I will map the Janes' and Mackens' on those to further refine areas for future research.

FThanks So much Roger! I was on Find my Past yesterday and found more JANES folks and there were more in Meath and Westmeath, as you had pointed out!
I'm now on the hunt for a resource that has "early", before Griffith's Valuation and the Townlands book published in 1851, Townland names. Our microfiche with every Parish's Townlands on individual hand drawn maps has names of Townlands that no longer existed by 1851. I tried to be creative with spelling and that worked for some but not all. I understand some Townlands were absorbed into others over time.
