Hi, I am looking for any information about my gggg grandparents Edmond (Ned) Baker and his wife Honora nee Quinlan, who lived in the Clonoulty area, and died sometime between 1832 and 1840. Their first child Margaret, born c1819, was baptised 10 January 1819, abode Gorteennamona, in St John the Baptist church at Clonoulty and emigrated to Australia in 1841 as a Bounty emigrant. Her 1841 bounty papers listed her parents as deceased. We would dearly love to know anything about Edmond and Honora or about the Baker and Quinlan families of the area. Their children, all baptised at Clonoulty, included Margaret; John baptised 27 February 1822 abode Gorteennamona; Thomas baptised 20 Dec 1825 abode Ballagh; Mary (who emigrated in 1850 under the Earl Grey orphan scheme) baptised 22 August 1827 and Bridget baptised 31 January 1832 abode Drummonaclara. We believe the younger children may have been in the Cashel workhouse in the 1840s. There is some confusion over Mary, as she is listed as age 16 when she emigrated in 1850, not 23 as we would have expected based on her baptismal record (perhaps a first daughter named Mary passed away, or her age was understated). With thanks and warm regards for any help anyone might be able to offer, even if it is just general information about Clonoulty in the period, Kylie.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I located the baptismal record for Margaret in 1819 on Find My Past but did not find her siblings. I'm sure they are on the parish register which is here http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0256

However, I did find three baptismal records for sons of John Baker and his wife Mary Roach living in Ballagh in the late 1840s and in fact John was listed in Ballagh in the 1850 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Clonoulty.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Thank you so much Roger for that swift response, there's a lot of great information there to look at and perhaps dig a little deeper and tease out a few more threads. I am so greatful for your help, and may be back in touch if I have any questions once I've sorted through it. Warm regards and thanks, Kylie

  • Hi Kylie,

There’s a chance we may be related. My ancestor Margaret Quinlan came from the same area, specifically from Drum Otway, near Rossmore, born 1829. Her parents were Larry or Lawrence Quinlan, and Mary Gorman. They married in Rossmore in 1817 and had Daniel 1820, John 1824,  Ellen 1826, Judith 1831, Sally 1833, Catherine 1836 and and Mary 1837 that I know of. Margaret emigrated to South Australia in 1855 and I have not been able to find what happened to the rest of the family, although DNA suggests some emigrated to Syracuse, New York. Having combed the parish records I have found there were not too many Quinlans in the area (lots of Ryan’s and Dwyers though!) so it’s possible Honoroa was Lawrence’s sister or cousin of some degree. Have you ever found parents for Honora?

    Warm regards
