The Garvie family of Monaghan who moved to Scotland in the early 1800

If Ann Garvie was born in Scotland in 1855 then that’s quite lucky. 1855 birth certificates in Scotland contain a lot of information that was dropped after that year. The certificate should tell you where and when Ann’s parents were married,  where they were born and how many other children they had at the time. I suggest you let us have all that information, plus the parents names, and we’ll see what we can find. Also what denomination were they?

The 1851 Scottish Census on ancestry has Ann's parents as John Garvie and CathArine and that John was born in Ireland about 1823. If he was born in Monaghan the earliest Garvie birth/baptism record on www.rootsireland.ie/ is 1830 so he's not there unfortunately.

There are however some John Garvie birth/baptisms from other counties as early as 1819.

The 1861 Scottish Census has Catharine's mother's surname as Cone but I couldn't her marriage to John in Ireland or Scotland or her birth/baptism I'm afraid.

I would stick with my advice that you need to look up Anne’s 1855 birth certificate (I see it listed under S. Queensferry ref 670/13) as that should contain the date and place of her parents marriage, which will then enable you to know which parish to look for ancestors in Monaghan. It may even give their exact places of birth (information that was only ever collected on 1855 birth certificates. It was dropped after that as being too time consuming). If searching records in Monaghan, the surname is likely to be spelled Garvey. That is by far the most common spelling in Ireland.

What may be the mother Catharine appears to have died in S. Queensferry in 1886, aged 54. That death certificate should give you her parents full names. It will also tell you whether John was still alive. You can then search for his death and get his parents names from that.(Scottish death certs list both the deceased's parents).

These certificates are all on the Scotlandspeople site and can be downloaded from it for less than £2 (sterling) a certificate.

If you post the date and place the parents were married and any information about their place sof birth, I'll try and direct you to where those places are. There could be relations there in Griffiths Valuation and other sources.

  Ann Garvie b. 1855 in South Queensfeery  Linlithgow,  parents were John Garvie b around 1829 and Catherine Coull b 1828  - John Garvie's b 1829 parents were Thomas Garvie b 1812 in Ireland and Francis Martin b 1806  Ireland.   The problem being that they all state They were born in Ireland with no county listed in all the census.   

 Then I had a bit of luck as Thomas Garvie b 1812, brother Patrick Garvie b 1811 states in the 1861 census that he was born in Monaghan, Ireland.  So as there is only a year between the birth of Thomas and Patrick I just assumed that Thomas was also born in Monaghan.    

After getting your advise I went and got the birth info of Anne Garvie b 1855 daughter of John Garvie and Catherine Coull.   
John is stated as a agricultral Labourer, 26 years and born Monaghan,   so that is great as it confirms that they were from Monaghan.   John married Catherine Coull in Edinburgh in 1850,  John states that he had 2 girls living and 1 deceased.  Catherine Coull states that she was 25 years and born in Queensferry.

Is there a town named Monaghan as well as a county - it would be great if they ment the town its self.     

We know that Thomas Garvie b 1812 and Patrick's Garvie's b 1811 father was James Garvie and mother Catherine Renolds due to Patrick's death info 8th Sept. 1895 Goat Lane, South Queensferry, West Lothian.

I am trying to arrange a trip to Ireland later next year,  so it would be great to be able to visit were the Garvie's were really from.    I have found the birth of a James Garvey b 2 July 1773, father being Brien Garvey and mother being Catt Loughran - baptism 4 July 1773, place Haggardstown, Louth, Ireland.   Obviously I am not sure if these are the same Garvie's even though the age would be about right.

Yes there is a town called Monaghan in the county of Monaghan. So that doesn’t narrow the search for you. The occupations may give you a clue. If John Garvie's father was an agricultural labourer or farmer then you are probably looking in rural areas rather than in the town.

You may struggle to find any church records for the family as not many parishes in Monaghan have records for the early 1800s.

I would not make any assumptions about the family in Louth. Unless you find separate evidence linking your family to Louth I would not think them likely to be the same family.  Probably a false trail. Some RC parishes in Ireland do have records for the 1700s, most don’t. So though your search has shown up someone of the right age etc, there could just as easily have been others in Monaghan but those records don’t exist, so you won’t find the right record. 

It is February 2023 right now and 2 days ago I just found this November 2016 message board message by chance.  And I think we’re distantly related. 

I was born in South Queensferry, as was my mum and dad and many other relatives.  

And my mum’s line has a Thomas Garvie married to Elizabeth Prior - who were from Couny Monaghan, Ireland.  They’re my mum’s great-grandparents. They lived in Gote Lane in South Queensferry, Scotland and raised their family of 7 kids there.

I am retired and do my own personal family genealogy as a personal hobby.  I’m not a professional genealogist but I’ve accumulated many years of amateur researching.

I now live in the U.S.
