Looking for info on the Taylor family from Castlecomer. Joseph Taylor married Kate Brennan in 1926 and had a daughter, Isabella ( Bella ) in 1934. Bella had a daughter in 1953 in Roscrea. They lived in Sean Ross Abbey until 1958 when the child was adopted and Bella moved to London. The child, my wife since 1974, would be very grateful for any relevant information.

Many Thanks

Bill and Evelyn Howe.

  • Bill,

The marriage was on 29.10.1925 and was between Joseph Taylor and Katie Brennan. You can view the certificate on-line free on this link:

    Joseph was a widower.

This might be Katie in the 1911 census:

    Same family in 1901:

This may be Joseph in 1901:

    And 1911:

Assuming I have found the right family, Joseph married Elizabeth Dooling in 1909:

They had had 1 child by 1911 which had died. Elizabeth Taylor died 13.5.1913 in Castlecomer workhouse:

  • Thanks very much Elwyn, it's confirmed a few details that we had and supplied some that we didn't have. We'd like to find details on Joseph and Katie Taylor's children but can't find anything at all. A previous post, placed by Jan Ho, in 2014 looks promising but she's not replying to our requests. It seems that she could be my wife's cousin. Thanks again. Bill.

  • Bill,

Searching up to 1944, I can see Isabella’s birth registered in Castlecomer 1934, Vol 3, page 295. Also a Joseph Apr – Jun 1930 Vol 3, page 309; also Margaret Oct – Dec 1931 Vol 3, page 283; John Apr-Jun 1935 Vol3, page 291 & Catharina T Taylor Oct – Dec 1939 Vol 3, page 285. Mothers maiden name shown as Brennan for all those births.

You can order a photocopy of the civil certificates from GRO Roscommon for €4 (euros).  http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx

You have to download and print off the form. Then either post or fax it back to them. You can’t e-mail it to them. However if you want them to e-mail the cert to back to you, they will do that, so tick the relevant box.

To Bill. If you are still trying to trace any of the children of Joseph Taylor and Kate Brennan, you are welcome to contact me by email at libertyseeker@hushmail.com  My late wonderful Mother was one of twins born to Joseph and Kate in January 1927.  Her baby brother did not survive the birth in a Kilkenny Hospital.  Joseph died in 1936 and after three very difficult years Kate died after childbirth in 1939.  The baby named George survived and died in his ? forties after a troubled life.  All the children were split up as far as I know and my Mother was in a children's home in Kilkenny then sent to Dublin as soon as she reached sixteen.  From there she was sent to Liverpool, if my memory serves me correctly then Herne Bay in Kent.  She never recovered from all the trauma and had no contact with Ireland at all.  it was just too painful for her.  I have more to tell you should  you want to know.  From Anne Taylor.  I changed my surname to Taylor by deed poll in memory of my mother.  Very best wishes to you and your wife.
