My ancestors were also in Shanakeela, in 2013 I went seeking out the village. (I now live in Texas but from Massachusetts)

Shannakeela is a townland consisting of just over 1,900 acres, and is located just west of Maam Cross on the road between Oughterard and Clifden - see the entry on the placename database (logainm.ie), and on the c1840 OSI map
You can see part of the townland as it appears now on Google Street View - probably not changed that much..
