Searching for John Byrnes born 12/24/1885 Lisnafedly, Monaghan.

The civil birth record images are online at www.irishgenealogy.ie and I went throught the Carrickmacross registration district records and could not find John's civil birth record.. Maybe the birth was not civilly registered.

I found the 1901 and 1911 census records for the family in Lisnafeddaly townland in Magheross civil parish. Peter Byrne died between 1901 and 1911. The 1911 census indicates that Rose had eight children and seven were still living in 1911. The 1901 census shows four of the children. I also found a record for a Margaret baptized in 1866 and a Patrick in 1868.

I also located the 1865 civil marriage record for Peter and Rose and the names of the fathers and mothers are listed.

Roger, this information is wonderful. Is there any record of when John came to America. Also I believe the name on his civil birth certificate was spelled as Bern...how the name changes i dont know....Thank you for finding my great-great grandparents that is amazing...is there anything about them? John Byrne’s birth is indeed registered under the spelling Bern, and it’s registered in 1886. (He was born on Christmas Eve and so evidently his father wasn’t able to register it till January, so it’s included with that year’s births).

You wonder why the spelling changes. In this case a factor is likely to be that Peter who registered the birth was illiterate (he just signed the register with his cross or mark), and so would probably be completely unaware as to how the name was spelled. However he was probably indifferent to it as well. Having a “correct” spelling is very much a 20th century preoccupation. Our ancestors weren’t that bothered about such matters and in Ireland even when fully literate you will see the spelling change all the time.

I see that Elwyn has helped you out with the birth record. I looked for marriage records for the parents of Peter and Rose but no luck. The records for the parish start in 1858 except for marriages for 1838 through early 1844.

John Byrne is my great great grandfather.  He was first married in Ireland and had three sons - John Gerald, Peter and Joseph.

John Gerald is my grandfather.  I have his birth certificate registered in the district of Raferagh in the superintendant registrars district of Carrickmacross in the county of Monaghan.  I can't make out the maiden name of his mother.  John Gerald Byrne was born 7/2/1910 .  His birth certificate lists John Byrne as his father and Bridget Byrne formerly ??? as his mother. 

Any insight you can provide would be greatly appreciated!!
