I have found a house named Rocklow east of Cashel and north of Fethard. Google Maps is a marvellous thing. This house is very close to the location where my g.g.g. uncle, Archdeacon John McEncroe, was born in 1794. He was ordained in Ireland, taught at the seminary in Maynooth, had a stint in the Carolinas USA before returning to Ireland to recover from yellow fever in the 1830s. He had a long career in the Catholic clergy in Australia. His home in Jamberoo NSW was also named Rocklow. I wonder if he named it after the house near his birthplace or whether the McEncroe's had any relationship with the house. Any clues?

      Conclusion . . . at this time . . . it is diffacult to say . . whether John McEncroe had resided in " Rocklow House " . .

It certainly points in that direction . . .

      Sara Barbour ( do you know ?? ) . . appears to have a detailed history of the man . . .

    • Thank you Eamonn and Paul for your interest in my query. Most accounts say that John McEncroe (I've never come across the "McEncrow/e" spelling before) was born in Ardsallagh which I understand is just west of Rocklow House. Unfortunately I do not have an Ancestry.com log-in (I'm always banging my head against their pay wall) so I cannot read the links you provided. However, our library has a log-in so I will try again there. From the headings some of them appear to be about his re-interment in St Mary's Cathedral. He is indeed there in the crypt. Just to confuse things, another biogapher, probably erroneously, thinks he was born in Rathsallagh which from maps appears to be west of Fethard. We all grew up hearing about Archdeacon McEncroe so it will be interesting to see if the accounts of his life provided above match up to the oral history.

Perhaps I should start another post about Rev. James Hanly of Moorstown and his two brother Thomas and Nicholas who all followed in McEncroe's footsteps to Australia to see if anyone knows about the Hanlys of Moorstown.

      Kind regards

      Trish

    • Hi Trish . . .

      I had a quick look at Hanly . . .

      Richael Hanly

        HERE showing  . . . Richard . . a property owner . . for the purpose of Church Tax . . .

        Parish - Mora . . Townland ..Mooretown

Mora. . .  parish would be geographically close to Rocklow . .

        ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

        When I search the next Tax list i.e.   " Griffiths Valuation " 1847 -1864

there is NO sign of a Hanly Family . . then residing . . in the parish of Mora . .

So . . one can only presume . . as you hinted . . they had been off to Oz.  !!

Could Mora parish . . have been the residence of the McEncroe's   ??

Have you tried enlisting the help of Maynooth in your search ???

        Cheers . . Eamonn.
