My cousins Joseph and Sarah Gardiner, nee Pielow lived in Chatsworth Row, Castlecomer from about 1893 when they married.
They had eight children, all accounted for except Harry.
Harry was born about 1902 and according to his sister was the last remaining sibling in Castlecomer when he died in 1952, but I cannot find any record of his death. Are there any locals out there who might remember the family and the occasion of his death and whether it was actually in Castlecomer.

Gary:
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
We do not have a parish liasion for Castlecomer.
I went to www.irishgenealogy.ie and searched for civil death records for a Harry or Henry Gardiner and found none in all of Ireland. If he died post-1958, no records would be available (I know you indicated that he died in 1952.
I did a wider sweep for Gardiner death records 1948-1858 in the Castlecomer registration district and the only one that popped up was for the father Joseph in 1948 and Henry was shown as the informant. You will need to sign-in to see the record.

You may want to contact the Castlecomer library branch to see if they can assist.

Hi Gary, this link shows the births of the 9 children of Joseph and Sarah there is a birth record for each. Cannot find a death record for Henry (Harry). Try both of these I was looking for a Fanny for ages only to discover she was actually born Eliza but it showed the former in both census records and she used it until the day she died. He was present at the death of his brother Thomas.
I am guessing they were all RC so you might find records in the local church, I have provided a link below. Call them before you go with names, dates birth etc. and give the time to find them though you may be able to go through them yourselves.
Out of interest where are you living, amazed at how far the Irish travellled. Best of luck.

Thanks Nuala,
I am living in Australia. Five of Joseph's siblings emigrated, three to Australia and supposedly the other two went to America. All others appeared to have died young so poor ol Joseph was left home alone, especially when his mother died when he was just 14, although his father was around for another twenty years. Then he lost four of his own children before they reached 50. Very sad.
I am intrigued by the fact that you have 9 births for children for Joseph & Sarah, as I only have 8, but could not check what you have done as there was no link??? Would you be able to post the link, or was father Joseph included in your nine?
They were all Church of Ireland parishioners.

Apologies I think maybe I counted wrongly here is a list of 8 though excuse the spelling of Pielow. Many could not read and write and relied on others to write it down they can often be guesses at what they think they are hearing. Yes times were hard and illness prevalent especially for the poor and unskilled in some ways has not changed even now though welfare provides a net.

If not Catholic you will need the churh out by the discover park just before you come over the bridge in to Castlecomer on the right hand side. If weather is warmer one of the days might have a wonder round another one my past times graveyards.. They are a history in themselves especially regards the loss of young children. Good Luck.

Yes Nuala, that is our family. Thank you for your efforts
I too find graveyards very interesting and having lost a child via stillbirth I feel the pain acutely of some of those poor parents losing a child or sometimes several.

Happy to be of help Gary and very sorry to hear abour your own child. I fortunately have not had that enter my life but I think it would break me in half. I lost my brother at 52 I was 48 just after Christmas and had to tell my mother as he lived in the UK her screams and cries that day will stay with me for the rest of my life and may all those little soults rest in peace it is something I hope I never have to experience.
I will keep my eye out but am currently tracing four families but it is amazing what you come across that rings other bells as Ireland was so small, some of this work will involve Castlecomer and I never know what I might find but will pass it on straight away.
Take care and welcome to the most time consuming, satisfying past time I have ever had.
Regards.

Thank you so much Nuala, Yes it is very time consuming. Quite often, days just disappear. Although it can be very frustrating as per my initial query!!! there are so many satisfying moments to be found as well.
Best wishes and thanks again
