Hi all,

Will be visiting the Silvermines (Tipperary) area in March 2017, so will be grateful for any information about how to follow up on on research into some of my ancestors who lived in Silvermines and surrounding areas.

In particular, advice welcome on where to look for local parish records / historical centres / genealogical societies with birth and marriage information for ancestors living in the areas near Silvermines and Nenagh in period from about 1800 to 1840 (so far I have found some records for later births in records available online via National Library of Ireland collection Diocese of Killaloe | County of Tipperary.)

Here's an overview of information about ancestors found so far:

  • GGG grandfather William Callanan and GGG grandmother Jane Hanley, both probably born in the area near Silvermines around 1800
  • Each owned properties registered in the Griffith's Valuation Records of 1847 / 1850 in Ballyhow (between Silvermines and Nenagh).
  • They had three children who migrated to Chicago, Illinois in the 1840s or early 1850s.

Here is an overview of William Callanan and Jane Hanley's children who emigrated to Chicago:

  • Elizabeth Jane Callanan (familysearch ID L2S1-5Y9 ) born 15 August 1835 in County Tipperary (probably near Ballyhow?), died 17 April 1911 Chicago Illinois
  • Margaret Callanan (familysearch ID LRHZ-DGJ ) born about 1840 in County Tipperary (probably near Ballyhow?), died 27 September 1907 in Chicago, Illinois
  • James Callanan (familysearch ID LRHZ-FD6 ) born about 1842 in County Tipperary (probably near Ballyhow?), missing and presumed dead in October 1871 Great Fire in Chicago, Illinois

Also related (either a niece or perhaps daughter) was:

  • Anne Callanan (familysearch ID LRHZ-FD6 ) born circa 1838 who  around 1857 married James Hanley (familysearch ID LRHZ-FD6 ).

Though I have not yet discovered their marriage record, I have found records for births of 6 children of Anne Callanan and James Hanley in the Silvermines Parish records:

  • Anne Hanley (familysearch ID LRCP-696 ) born 10 November 1858 Silvermines Parish, death unknown
  • James Hanley (familysearch ID LRCP-8J3 ) born 28 April 1860 Silvermines Parish, death unknown
  • Michael Hanley (familysearch ID LRCP-9DL ) born 16 April 1862 Silvermines Parish, death in Chicago, Illinois 30 September 1862 (he is buried in family grave plot of Elizabeth Jane Callanan's husband, Maurice Dannehy)
  • Mary Hanley (familysearch ID LRCP-9DL ) born 6 October 1863 Silvermines Parish, death unknown
  • William C Hanley (familysearch ID LLMF-1N6 ) born 7 February 1865 Silvermines Parish, death in Chicago, Illinois 30 September 1948
  • John F Hanley (familysearch ID M8XP-83R ) born 15 November 1866 Silvermines Parish, death in Chicago, Illinois 6 September 1935

The children of Anne Callanan and James Callanan listed above had close family connections with Elizabeth Callanan in Chicago and some travelled / emigrated and lived / died in Chicago:

  • Michael Hanley was born in Silvermines and died 5 months later in Chicago, after which his parents returned to Ireland where all subsequent children were born.
  • William C Hanley in 1894 married Elizabeth Callanan's daughter Margaret Anne Dannehy, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and lived  in Chicago for the rest of his life.
  • John F Hanley also emigrated to and died in Chicago.

Although they evidently visited Chicago at least once, in 1862, It seems that parents Anne Callanan and James Callanan decided to remain living near Silvermines Ireland for the rest of their lives?

Any further information about these Calannan / Hanley families living near Silvermines will be much appreciated.  Also welcome are tips / practical advice about how to carry through with further research using local resources.

Many thanks for whatever help you can offer.

Kind regards,

Thom

  • Hi Roger,

As it's been a couple weeks since your kind welcome message on 15th, and since I haven't yet heard anything from Silvermines parish liaison, I'm letting you know about some of my intermim progress in research.

At this point I would particularly welcome some further local knowledge regarding:

Here are some recent discoveries in tracking down Hanley / Callanan ancestors from Silvermines / Nenagh area:

    • 1901 and 1911 census records show that Hanley ancestors continuing to reside on family farm after their other family members (children / brothers) emigrated and settled permanently in Chicago in the 1880s
    • both of these census records give the exact location of Hanley family farm

According to census records, the family farm residence of James Hanley and Anne Callanan was:

House 1 in Garryclogher townland, Kilmore, County Tipperary, Ireland

    (see http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Tipperary/Kilmore/Garr… and http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Tipperary/Kilmore/Garr… )

Checking on Google maps, I find this farm in Garryclogher seems to be immediately adjacent to Ballyhow farmland where earlier record indicates the William Callanan and Jane Hanley had been living with their children who emigrated to the Chicago in the late 1840s or 1850s.

If any contacts from the Silvermines / Nenagh areas can provide some insight into these specific locations, I'll be very grateful.

    Kind regards,

    Thom
