I am trying to learn more about my great great grandmother’s McCarthy family who lived in Darranstown, Bulgaden-Martinstown, Limerick. My gg grandmother, Mary (Marie) McCarthy Raleigh, was born about 1809 according to her death record that I found on RootsIreland. She died in 1877 in Drumcomogue, Emly, Tipperary. Per RootsIreland, Mary married Patrick Raleigh of Emly, Tipperary (Ballyholohan/ Drumcomogue) in 1838 in Bulgaden. Witnesses were Michael McCarthy and John Shearin. No father’s first name was identified, just McCarthy. Catherine McCarthy was sponsor for one of their son’s baptism.
Is anyone familiar with this family or knows Marie's father's name?
Thank you- Mary

Dear Mary
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
Records for the RC parish of Bulgaden-Ballinvana begin in March 1812 for baptisms and June 1812 for marriages. You say that her father's first name is not listed on her marriage and as you believe she was born in 1809 and therefore before the parish records begin in 1812, it could prove very difficult to locate that information.
Do you know if she had any siblings? Perhaps their baptism records are recorded after March 1812 and therefore hold the info you need.
Best wishes

Clare,
Thank you for responding to my message. I do not know of any siblings but have been trying to find information on Catherine and Michael who were sponsors/ witnesses at her child's baptism/ her marriage.
I'll keep looking.

Hi Mary,
I'd be interested to hear if you find anything.
I have some McCarthy's in my family tree and I've reason to believe one of them has a connection to Darranstown but I haven't been able to figure it out yet.
I have an Honoria McCarthy married Edmund Kearney sometime around 1790.
Their son James Kearney rented land in Darranstown and married Johanna McCarthy in 1846 in Bulgaden.
I'm thinking that either Honoria was herself from Darranstown and it was through her connection that James got the rental of the land. Or James rented the land and settled down with nice local girl :)

JKearney,
I was glad to hear from you. I am still trying to figure out my McCarthy Darranstown roots. I found a number of McCarthys in the parish records but I am not sure how they all connect. I could not find a baptismal record for James Kearney. I did look at all counties, as well as Limerick. I found James and Honoria's marriage record from Bulgaden. Since marriages typically take place at the wife's parish, I assume that is where she is from. I pulled records from RootsIreland for Honoria McCarthy. One could be her. Since Michael was a witness to my Maria McCarthy's wedding in 1838 to Patrick Raleigh, maybe one of the Michael McCarthys listed below are connected to both of them. Have you done any DNA testing?
Take care- Mary

Hi,
Yeah that's the right marriage record for James and Johanna.
According to his death record, James was born around 1796 so that would be before the parish records started.
Johanna was about 70 when she died in 1888 so that would put her birth year around the 1818 mark. Given the tradition of naming convention for children I think that Johanna's parents were Thomas and Mary. I didn't see that record in 1827 that you have with parents Thomas and Margaret Nugent the last time I looked at the bulgaden records, while the year is a bit late it might be something to look into anyway. Since Johanna died before the 1901 census the only record of her age I have is from her death record which may be a bit off.

Raleigh/ McCarthy 1838 marriage
I enjoyed the recent article on marriage records. I continue to have difficulty reading my my great great grandparents' record on NLI and understanding what it means. Patrick Raleigh of Emly married Maria McCarthy of ?? 26 April 1838 in Bulgaden. They were granted some sort of dispensation?
02428/02, Bulgaden - Catholic Parish Registers at the NLI
I hope someone can help me translate and provide me a clue of what it means.
Thank you- Mary
