Searching for information to ELIZABETH McMAHON (of Pound Street Co Clare) married CORNELIUS O'BRIEN of Shanagolden Limerick. Names from the Limerick Regional Archives list godparents names to their 13 children as: MARY McMAHON & Jeremiah O'BRIEN; PATRICK & ANN McMAHON & JOHN BARRY; THOMAS McMAHON & Margaret O'BRIEN; also MARY MANN; MARGARET BARRY: ELIZABETH KIELY; MICHAEL McDONNELL; JOHN & MARGARET SHEAHAN. ELIZABETH McMAHON and her husband, CORNELIUS O'BRIEN travelled to Sydney Australia in 1853 with some of their children on the ship "Blundell".  ELIZABETH died on the day they entered the harbour.  The Records Archives have suggested the area ELIZABETH was from is KILRUSH as POUND STREET Co CLARE is registered on the shipping records.  Thank you.

  • Hello,

I don’t have a direct connection the McMAHON’s (yet?) but wanted to share some research…

I am a descendant of Daniel Behan and Mary Scanlan. They married at in 1851 at St. Senan’s and then their four daughters were baptized (1855-1865) at St. Senan’s Church. The entry from the church records for their youngest includes Pound St. and sponsor Mary McMAHON:

1865-Nov-18  Baptized Bridget Behan in the Catholic parish of Kilrush, County Clare, Ireland. Parents:  Daniel Behan and Mary Scanlan, on Pound Street, Sponsors:  Michael Behan and Mary McMAHON

St. Senan's, Diocese of Killaloe, County of Clare, Variant forms of parish name: Kilrush http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0808

My family immigrated to the United States about 1871, settling in Chicago, IL. My great grandmother, Anna Behan b. 1860 and her husband John W. Maher b. 1864 are buried with the Thomas McMAHON family. I don’t know the connection, family or friends, but here is what I have found in U.S. records:

    Thomas McMAHON, b. 1840 – d. 1916, m. 1871 – Mary Shannon, in Chicago, IL

    http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=162130309

Parents: Daniel McMAHON and Margaret Ryan

    Children: James T. McMAHON, b. 1873 – d. 1918, Margaret (died as an infant?)

Siblings: Bridget McMAHON, Mary McMAHON, Catherine McMAHON, b. 1864, in Kilrush, Clare – d. 1936, m. 1890 – George Robinson, in Chicago, IL.

The cemetery list shows Mary Shannon McMahon, Bridget McMahon and Mary McMahon all buried on the same day, Nov. 22, 1902. Thomas’s wife, Mary Shannon McMahon, died Nov. 9. 1902, I don’t have details on Bridget and Mary.

  • Dear dottgirl,

I'm originally from County Clare in Ireland and living in Australia. I'm currently researching the O'Brien family you mentioned. Here is some information on the family in a record from Newcastle Industrial School for Girls in New South Wales, Australia, where Elizabeth's youngest daughter Eliza (who was 2 when they boarded the Blundell) was sent:: http://nis.wikidot.com/o-brien

I would be very keen to chat about any further information you might have unearthed on the family. Very happy to reciprocate.

    Kindest regards,

    Anne
