Hi,
I am looking for information about my great grandfather Daniel Black. He was born in Kilrea, Co. Derry 1860(?). His father was John Black a tenant farmer. He married in 1885 in Greenock Scotland.
Would be grateful for any information.
Regards
R Kelly.

I can’t see a marriage in Greenock in 1885. However I do see one in 1881. Is the date wrong? Can you give us both Daniel’s parents names to be sure of finding the right family? Do you know what denomination he was? We’ll need that to trace his birth as it’s before the start of statutory birth registration in Ireland (1864).
I looked in Griffiths Valuation for Kilrea c 1858, and I don’t see any Black farm in the area at all. However if we have both the parents’ names and they married after 1845, I may be able to find their marriage in the statutory records and work from that. It’s a very common name in that area and so the more detail we have, the better.

Hi,
Thank you for your reply. Apologies, my mistake I took details from info a relative had given me.
Daniel Black married Sarah Coppals in Greenock St Mary's Catholic Church in 1881 both shown as 18.
Daniels parents are shown as , John Black , Labourer- deceased and Mary Reynolds.
This is all the info I have prior to them living in Greenock.
Thank you for your help.

Rkelly,
I searched the RC parish registers and found a marriage for John Black and Mary Renolds (sic) on 28.10.1858 in Kilrea. Fathers appear to be Daniel Black and William Renolds.
You might want to search the registers further for John’s baptism, and that of any siblings.

Kilrea falls within the Ballymoney civil registration district. Given that John Black was dead by 1881, I searched for deaths 1864 – 1881. There’s only 1 adult death in that period. He died on 29th March 1874 aged 35. You might want to look at that to see if he was a married man and labourer Kilrea. You can view the original certificate on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:
You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2.50 (sterling) to a view a certificate.
