My great grandfather (John) Garrett Murphy was born in Tralee, Kerry according to his death certificate, which also names his parents as John Garrett Murphy and Norah Cassin. I have attached a copy of his DC.
He married Mary Hogan in 1887 in St Marys Catholic Church, Ipswich, Queensland, and died in the Benevolent Asylum, Dunwich, Queensland Australia in 1946.
I have found a record of a Garrett Murphy arriving in Cooktown, Queensland on the Duke of Devonshire in 1883, although I am not sure that this is my ggrandfather. I don't know whether his parents left Ireland for Australia, or whether Garrett came out alone as a young man. To date I have found no record of either of his parents in Australia.
I would like to find records that verify the date and place of his birth, names of his parents and/or siblings and extended family, and any other relevant information about his life in Ireland.
Thanks,
Maxine Jones

Hi Maxine, Cassin is sometimes a corruption of the name Kissane. Though I have searched irishgenealogy.ie at length I am not coming up with a match for any of the variations.
These are some of the original records for the RC Parish of Tralee online which would be worth checking out
http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0680
There is a John Murphy listed in Tralee in 1853
Only one Garrett Murphy but he is listed in Killarney
As you know Murphy is a very common name and the 'Garrett' may have been a local way used to differentiate the different Murphy families from each other.
There are quite a number of Murphy's who have Kissane as a baptismal sponsor but again nothing I can connect to your specific couple. The original records microfilmed at the nli link above are probably your best port of call.
Please let us know if you find something more that we can work with.Warm wishes

PS Death records are available free online at irishgenealogy.ie from 1864 search in Civil Registration and you might find John Murphy and/or Nora Murphy there which would give you a placename.
