Hello
I am researching my family history and have hit a brick wall. My furthest link into my Irish past is a George Archbold.
I don't know where George is originally from and so I am coming to investigate in person at Easter week. George lived in Dublin but wasn't born there. His second child was baptised 19th March 1841 in Ballyconran, Kilrush. What intrigues me is that at that time he used his other surname of Aspel and his wife was Maria Doyle.
My reason for explaining all this is that I need a bit of local insight. I would love to know why people had interchangeable surnames and if you could suggest how I might look for George's first born Michael (1840 ish) who is my direct line.
Also I am advised that George Aspel is in the wrong parish here as the name rarely appears. This is a bit odd as I assume in early 1800's the population was more static but I could be wrong.
Can anyone guide me, I have written to the parish church mentioned in another post too? I don't want to drive past my homelands without realising.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
We do not have a parish liaison in that area of Co. Wexford.
The Roman Catholic, records are likely not available for Michael since the parish baptismal records start in May 1841. http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0569
I did locate a baptismal record for a Thomas in 1842. However, since the date was March 19th, is this the same record that you mentioned in your note for March 19th 1841?

I can't help you with the issues of George's two surnames.

I believe I may be able to shed some light on the surnames - Archbold is apparently an Anglicization of the old Irish Áirseabóid, and the this could sound similar to Aspel to an English speaker. McLysaght's Surnames of Ireland listed Aspel as 'A variant of Archbold in east Leinster'
HIs entry for Archbold/Archibald suggests that people with this surname were 'very early settlers in east Leinster.'

Hello,
I am looking for information on my Great, great Grandmother. Her maiden name was Catherine Aspel or sometimes spelled Asple of Wexford. She married a George Carney and had son George (1843) and William 1850. William is my Great Grandfather and migrated to Australia. The children were Baptised at Piercestown. George(Senior) was a Memorial Stonemason. I have found the comments on the Aspel name most helpful. Thanks.
Would love to know if the Carney and Aspel names are still known in Wexford today and I have oftened wondered what happened to the family that stayed in Wexford. It has taken me many years to find out the information as above.
William Carney was a sailor and ended up settling in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia and worked on the cross river ferries. He gave up working on the high seas about the time he married in 1885.
Would appreciate any comments people have, especially in filling in further details. I have no photos at all of this side of my family (except of my Father).
I am new to Ireland Reaching Out.
Regards,
Pam Miller (Nee Carney)
