Hi All

Searching John Davis - birth place unknown, married Judith Fa(he)rty  and they had a daughter Ann, who states on some census that she was born in Galway, town or county?, b c 1840. When she marries John Meeres in Corrofin in 1868, her parents, John an d Judith are farming in Ballyvaughan. We stood on the hill overlooking the green fields, the inlet below, and it looked beautiful. However not armed with enough information at the time, we did not get to see the farm

Any information on this family would be appreciated. Also happy to share

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

    Some possible leads

I checked the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listings for Co. Clare and there were three John Davis records. Two of the three were from southern Co. Clare. One of the records was in Ballinaboy civil parish which is south of Ballyvaughan. The corresponding RC parish is Corrofin which corresponds to the 1868 marriage. John Davis and his family lived in Corrofin town in the townland Baunkyle.See link http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/clare/killinaboy.htm

I searched for an Ann Davis baptismal record and there was an 1836 record in the Rath/Ballinaboy/Corrofin parish but the mother was a Bridget Casey. (Ignore the surname of the father as Casey. The program that read the record made a mistake). Here is the parish register for Rath/Corrofin http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0799

I searched the civil death index records in the Corrofin registration district and there was a John Davis who died at age 83 in 1890. The death index records (plus birth and marriage) are available at www.irishgenealogy.ie  Starting in 1891 the actual images are available so you are one year off. However, the Irish government has plans to add images of 1890 deaths and earlier at some point but we don't know when. I would wait until the images are added and then check the record out. See index record below.

  • Hi Roger,

On John Meeres and Ann Davis' marriage her mother is definitley stated as Judith Faherty. She also claims to be born in Galway.  Could John Davis have come from Galway - it is across the inlet to Ballyvaughan. I shall search the records you have given me, but I do feel that I might have to search in Galway - and where there I would not have a clue.

Thank you very much for the death reference I shall follow up on that, also

We also visited a place called Cooga Ruau? where there were cross roads - this is where Martin Meeres was reputedly born. There were 3 old houses - stone with no roofs. A bit sad now looking back - however they did survive and make good in New Zealand.

    Many Thanks for your efforts

    Hilary

I can't help with Cooga Ruau.

I looked at the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listings for Co. Galway www.askaboutireland.ie and there were nine John Davis records but none of the records were for parishes in close promimity to Co. Clare.
