  • Dear Mary, there are 127 Costelloe records for Tralee online 1770-1830 which you are probably familiear with already

    https://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/search.jsp?namefm=&namel=Costello&location=Tralee&yyfrom=1770&yyto=1830&submit=Search

In some instances familysearch has records which are not listed in the above collection so they are also worth a try.

Walter Costelloe is recorded as a witness at an 1814 marriage. It is possible that Margaret King was his wife or sister and so is worth investigating further

The name Walter is unusual so it would be worth searching for a man by that name in Griffith's Valuation, the Tithe Applotments and even the 1901 Census in case Walter senior had a son that is recorded.

I hope this helps you in your search.

    Mary,

I am also looking for Costello's and Curran's possibly from Tralee, County Kerry.  My 2nd great grandmother was Margaret Costello (born between 1828-1844) and her Virginia (US) death certificate lists parents as Ulick Costello and Mary Keane.  I have exhausted ancestry, family search and genealogy websites and cannot find any information.  Were you able to find anything on your Patrick Costello?

  • Hi Kim, I was just looking at him today in fact. I did find Walter in Griffith's valuation - https://www.ancestry.com/interactive/1269/32504_Kerry_13-C01

and the above writer stated that Walter is an uncommon name so I feel that this might be correct. The name Walter also came down the generations in my family, my grandmother had both a brother and a nephew Walter, so this feels sort of built-in. I also am linked to some family trees, although I didn't change my information, there are Costello family trees that have the father of Patrick as Michael and his mother is Honora something. I'm sticking w/ Walter for now because of the naming patterns. Those families also had a John David in each generation, that carried down also. I can't seem to copy and paste so let me detail my Costelloes:

    Walter b. 1780 --> Patrick b. ~1814 Tralee m. Julia Tangney b. 1820 Lisatagil (part of Currow) --> children: Walter b. 1842, John David b.1848, Thomas b. 1851; Margaret b. 1852; these 4 all born in Ireland, the family emigrates to Boston --> Patrick b. 1853; Ellen Elizabeth*  b. 1855; Jeremiah Jesse b. 1857; Maurice F 1859.

Ellen Elizabeth is my great-grandmother, she married Denis Long from Portsmouth, NH - the rest of the Costello group all lived and stayed closer to the Boston area. I'm familiar with all of these names, I think Ellen (Nell ) named all of her children after her siblings - Jeremiah Long; Walter Long; John David Long; Julia (after her mother) Long; Margaret (my grandmother) Long; Maurice and a few more.

If you're able to search in Ancestry - my tree is Badger/Curran and my username is maryecurran - take a look. Ignore the Badger side, these folks are in the Curran part of the tree. Speaking of Currans!! Is that your original name or a married name? Are you looking for your Curran origin?

I matched w/ DNA to a young man whose GGM was a Johanna Curran from Annascaul, Co. Kerry. On the Dingle penninnsula. All of his other relatives were French-Canadian, so I felt pretty safe with that info. But I still have a mystery and want more proof. My GGF was Patrick Curran and it was a second marriage for him to Mary Ann Clark Kelly (a widow). If he is the Patrick that I think he is then his first wife was Catherine Doyle and they had several children, also several that died young. His siblings were: John, Johanna and Timothy. Their father Patrick Curran also emigrated although I think they all came at different times, he lived to age 105 and died in Weymouth, MA.

I'd love to know if any of this sounds familiar, I'm still trying to prove that I have the correct Patrick #2.

If you haven't done the DNA, It can open some doors. I just connected today with another Tangney - we still need to figure out the link, but it's an unusual name and they are in the same location. Facebook has several genealogy groups going - there is one for Co. Kerry, so you can request a join.

Let me know if you have any feedback or questions, good luck!

    Best, Mary Ellen Curran

    Hi Mary,

Thank you for your response.  Here is all I know so far for my Curran/Costello family:

My gg-grandfather was Peter Curran born 1830 in County Kerry.  I know this due to his immigration papers (1854) and his death certificate. (Portsmouth, VA).   I cannot confirm any information for him in Ireland.  I did find a Peter O'Currane born the same year in Tralee.  His parents are listed as John O'Currane and Johanna Cournane.  That Peter married Honora Connor and had 2 daughters; Honora Currane (1850) and Julia Currane (1853) all in Ireland.  I cannot find a marriage record though.  I also cannot  find any other records for Honora or the daughters.

Im not sure that record is my Peter since he immigrated to Portsmouth, VA in 1854 and married Margaret Costello, my gg grandmother.  Their first son John (my g grandfather) was born 1959. They had 2 more sons; Martin b. 1860, Peter b. 1864.

Margaret Costello was born in Ireland somewhere between 1828 and 1844.  Her death certificate says 1844 and her headstone says 1828.  Margaret's parents listed on her death certificate are Ulick Costello and Mary Keane, both born in Ireland.  I have no idea how to link Mary Keane or Margaret Costello back to Ireland since there are so many with the same name and I don't have an exact year of birth for Margaret.

I did find a baptism record for Ulick Costalow b. 24 Nov 1812 in Killorglin, parents are John Costalow and Honora Murphy.  I cannot find any other records for Ulick so I cannot even connect him to Mary Keane. I'm also not sure about this record because Ulick b. 1812 > Margaret b. bet. 1828-1844 > John b. 1859 doesn't really work.

I also wish I could find siblings in Ireland for any of the above but I have not been successful as of yet, so I don't know if our Costello's or Curran's cross paths.

I wish I had more concrete information but that's all I have.  Oh, and yes I am a Curran!
