I am Barbara (MOORE) Wimble from Sydney Australia.

I am a McCollum researcher - my McCOLLUM/Collum forebears coming from County Fermanagh.

The earliest McCollum's from Fermanagh is a Thomas MacCollum in 1760's.

I am interested in where they came from & noted the 13 McCollum households around the Dunluce area in Penders 1659 census.

I have read up on the information of John & Hugh McCollum who were land agents for the 1st Earl of Antrim & Capt Randal McCollum (a brother?) also.

Their daughters married into the LECKY, WHITE & MONTGOMERY families.

I have found a  McCollum family (Hugh, Thomas, Terrance, Randall, William Rebecca) coming to C. Cavan in late 1700's & from them Rev Randal McCollum in Glasleck Presbyterian Church.

Is anyone researching these early McCollum's or know anymore about their origins?

Thanks

Barbara

  • Barbara,

If you search the PRONI e-catalogue you will find a number of references to McCollum around Dunluce. You might want to study those. For example, D2977/3A/2/1/11A is a lease dated 1695:

Lease, John O'Neil of Edenduffcarrick and Hugh McCollum of Dunluce, to Charles McAlister Gent., of Carnduff, of the 2 quarters of Carnduff, 1 quarter of Cregganboy and the salmon fishing of Kinbane, barony of Cary, for 14 years. Rent £20, 6d per pound receivers fees and 2 good 3 year old muttons, unshorn, per year or 4/- in lieu. Courts Leet and Baron. Tenant to build 20 perches of ditch and plant 20 trees per year.

Edenduffcarrick is the old name for Shane’s Castle, by Lough Neagh. The O’Neills at Shanes Castle married into the McDonnell family.

Many of the tenants on the McDonnell estate in north east Antrim originated in McDonnell lands in Scotland in the 1500s and early 1600s, ie Islay, Jura, Kintyre etc. So it wouldn’t be too surprising if that’s where the Dunluce McCollums came from. But that’s just speculation.

There’s a book on the Stewarts of Ballintoy who were also the Earl of Antrim’s estate managers. They originated in Bute. I don’t know that book might mention the McCollum connection.

The names you have mentioned are all my ancestors.  Ialso live in Australia and would love to communicate further with you about the McCollum lineage.

  • Hi Kathleen

There were numerous McCollum families in Antrim in early 1800's. I have not found a McCollum - O'Donnell connection in any research I have done (although not nspecifically looking for it then)!

I guess you have looked at the usual Irish sites as well as Scotlandspeople to see what you can find?

I just had a quick look on familysearch .org but not enough details to be sure of anything.

    Cheers

  • I'm related to the Armagh branch through my gran. Thomas Mccollum of Athboy was her uncle. Pretty sure I'm related to the Cavan line as I saw a picture of one of those descendants online and she looks like my gran and cousins. My dad's dna is on Ancestry and he is distantly related to someone who has an ancestor from Craignish so I think this is when the McCollums came across..., she listed these details... John "Old John" McCollum, Sr. (1657, Craignish Castle, Argyllshire, Scotland - April, 18, 1760, Basking Ridge, Somerset, NJ - 103 years old) - my 7th Great Grandfather | married Mary Bern (1676 - April 2, 1760) Old John came to America in 1685 as a Scottish prisoner banished by the King Charles to "his Majesty's plantations abroad" due to Jacobite religious conflict and ordered deported to East New Jersey, USA. They had 8 children, died 2 weeks apart.
