Seeking additional information about my 3x great-grandparents, James Danahy/Denahy (and perhaps myriad other spellings) (born abt. 1801) and Ellen McSweeny (born abt. 1811) from County Kerry. They left Ireland for Canada, probably in the mid-1830’s, with two children, Mary (born abt. 1832) and Cathrine (born abt. 1833). It appears that their first child born in Canada was Ellen (born abt. 1840) in the Township of Nichol, County of Wellington in present-day Ontario. Six children followed: Margaret (born abt. 1842), Hanora (born abt. 1843), Johannah (born abt. 1844), James (born abt. 1845), Ann (born abt. 1847), and Patrick (born abt. 1848). James Danahy was a farmer and a Roman Catholic. Any insight as to where in Kerry they came from would be appreciated.

  • A probable marriage in Killorgan Catholic Parish Co. Kerry - James Dinahy and Helen Sweeny 25th November 1830.  The town of Killorgan is located to the north west of Killarney.  There are some details of the area in Lewis Topographical Dictionary of 1837.

In addition I found the baptisms in the same parish of Mary Dinahy on the 18th September 1831 and Catherine Dinahy in the 29th August 1834.   (the marriage and baptism links are all to the free IrishGenealogy website)

The marriage and the baptism of Mary mention the 'Armoneel' which I believe is a reference to the townland of Ardmoneel (placename database) which is a townland located just south of the town of Killorglin, the baptism of Catherine mentions 'Garrihdoo' which is probably the adjacent townland of Garrahadoo.
