Hello there, I am seeking information on the Lahey Family whom I’ve traced back to Coolmoyne/Fethard. My 3xG grandfather who came to the United States in 1850 was the son of a Daniel Lahey who had 7 other children all born between 1826-1845. I would LOVE to find the church they may have been baptized in and even more a cemetery where I can visit while in town. The Griffith Valuation has them living in Coolmoyne (Fennell) and renting from a George Fennell. Any assistance or direction in where/how to locate a church would be of so much appreciation!!!

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I assume your family were RC. Here is a link to a site which contains info on the RC church of the Holy Trinity which is located on Main St.in the village of Fethard. There is a cemetery attached.

Are you coming to Ireland this year?

Thank you Roger for the link, I will start there!! My family was in fact RC. I’m actually heading across the pond this upcoming week and am doing some last minute scurrying to see what I might be able to find. This website looks like it could be very helpful. I found Fethard on the Baptism records, but the parish of Rathcool was noted on the Griffith Valuation.  I am having trouble determining what’s what and if these are completely different locations or are within the same area just being identified differently. Hope that makes sense as I try to type through my confusion. :-/

Rathcool is the civil parish just to the north of Fethard civil parish.

I will alert our HQ about your trip.

Greetings,  My Keeffe (O'Keeffe) family lived in Coolmoyne - Fennel around the same time as Daniel Lahey. They too rented from George Fennel.   I can find a 1827 Tithe record and a Griffith's Valuation of our Keeffe ancestors there.  I'm sure they were parishioners at Holy Trinity Church in Fethard, but I believe one of their childen, John Keeffe b.1838-1848, is buried at St. Mark's Famine Cemetery south of Cashel.   There is a cemetery west of Fethard (Parkland, Parkside?), and south of O'Brien's Cement Co that is abandoned, and would be worth checking, but you would have to get permission from the current owner. The Lahey's and Keeffe's were likely neighbors, as the townland was only about twenty people.   Regards, John O'Keefe, Madison, WI USA

  • John, Wow!!! I am so excited to make this connection! I looked back at the Griffith Valuation and sure enough I see your ancestor several names above mine!! I am responding from my cell currently and once I can get to a device where I can zone in on the area you are mentioning I will. Can’t promise I won’t have more questions for you!! For now, THANK YOU and I am grateful for your response!! Spring

  • John, was curious if you could provide any additional information on the cemetery you mentioned. I’d like to exhaust all leads while simultaneously praying something turns up. I leave for Ireland this Friday and have dedicated next Wednesday to hunting and touring and scavenging through stinging nettles to find my family! The less time I have to spend lost, the better it’ll be! My personal email is  sprgtme@yahoo.com, if that helps any. Again, THANK YOU!! Hearing from you and actually making a connection has brought so much hope and realness to this search. After years of honing in, I finally feel like I’m closer than ever! Sincerely, Spring Bryer
