Hello! I am searching for any info regarding the O’Meara and Maher families.  The information I have is for Michael O’Meara born about 1804 in the Barony of Alowe Navan, Co. Meath. There are a few parishes listed: Navan by the Boyne of Donaghmore, Ardsallagh and Bective.  The record I have shows his father to be Michael O’Meara and mother Elizabeth Maher.   He immigrated to Ottawa, Ontario, Canada where he married Julia Madden in 1820.

Thank you! Deidre

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I've searched two subscription sites, Roots Ireland and FindMyPast.ie  and did not locate the baptismal record for Michael or his parents marriage record. The RC church records for Navan RC are available for that time period.  My guess is that the baptism and marriage occurred in a nearby parish which no longer has records back to 1800.

Ardsallagh, Donaghmore and Bective are all civil parishes in Co. Meath in the area around Navan. Ardsallagh and Donaghmore are connected to Navan RC parish but Bective is related to Dunderry RC parish where records are available starting in 1837.

You may want to add Michael's story to our XO Chronicles site and possibly someone will see a connection

  • Deidre, a chara,

In the 1854 Griffith's Valuation there is a Michael O' Meara listed as leasing a house & yard at 99 Brews Hill St, from a John Leonard, in Navan town, in the Townland of Town Parks.  The house & yard had an annual valuation of 6 pounds.  There are no Mahers listed in Navan Parish, but there are 42 Maher listings in Meath.

A good site to check is www.navanhistory.ie.  This site will get you into the Navan & District Historical Society, which has a lot of information on the Navan area.  In Volume 1 of their journal, Navan & its People & its Past, is an article on the Ardsallagh Townland Census of 1821, but no O'meara or Maher are listed.

I think that all the people listed worked for the Landlord Earl Ludlow, on the buildings, Great House, & lands that made up Ardsallagh Townland.  This article is on the Society's website.  As you may or not know, most of  the Census Records were destroyed before the 1901 & 1911 Censuses, which are OnLine.  There are bits of the 1821 Census available from the Mormon Church's website -Family Search.  It's on microfiche & the area around Navan is inclulded, as I used it to research my G-G-G Grandfather who was a gardiner on the Ludlow Estate.  Perhaps the Mormon Church or the Navan Society can help you in obtaining the micrfiche.

    Good luck in you searching.
