I have some updates on Edward “Ned” Ring and Mary Purcell. Ned and Mary emigrated to the US (Boston) in 1896 with their 5 youngest children and settled in South Boston, Massachusetts. The older children married and emigrated to the US under their spouses name.  The four girls all married between 1903-1908 and stayed in the S Boston area. Patrick moved to NYC, not sure when, but left for Liverpool and Queenstown in Oct 1904. He arrived back in NYC (Ellis Island) in April 1905 and promptly married an attractive girl from Belgium, Angela Boon. In the June 1905 census for NYC they are listed as married  first child born in Nov 1905.Patrick died in 1918 in NYC leaving Angela a widow. Angela married Patrick’s cousin Michael Ryan and had two more children. She died during childbirth in 1918. Patrick’s parents, Ned and Mary stayed in S Boston. I haven’t found any death records but researching with RC Churches in the area

    Tim,

I found a death notice on newspapers.com in the Boston Globe of 31 Jan 1916 on the Jan 29, 1916 death of a Mary Ring (nee Purcell). She is listed as a widow of Edward Ring. So Edward died before 1916. Notice indicates a 9AM Solemn High Mass at St Peter and Paul's church.

Tim, think this may be the birth of Michael Ryan cousin of Patrick Ring.

  • Thank you for the birth record. I recall seeing Michael’s name on a passenger list coming into NYC(Ellis Island) shortly after Patrick’s death. A common practice was for someone in the family to take care of the widow particularly when the children were young. In this case Michael married Angela soon after.

Thank you Marge Gillis for the newspaper articles on the death of Edward and Mary. Also the death certificate for Edward. This was a great help in finding the cemetery and grave.

I have a hand drawn family tree from 1979 given by a cousin that details the children and grandchildren of Edward “Ned” Ring and Mary (née Purcell) Ring. This tree lists Edward Ring and Anne Kinchler as Ned’s parents, and Tobias Purcell and Anne Kelley as Mary’s parents. I have been laboring over Ned’s Ancestry as an earlier entry listed his father as John. I do have a theory. Ned was in the coal mining industry, and I suggest his father was most likely in it too. People didn’t travel very far from their hometown as the transportation wasn’t what it is today. I think that Ned and Mary were shocked by the death of 5 children, and decided to get out to start a new life. 4 of those children were > 2 years. Michael was 19, and I suggest he was in the coal industry too.

  • Nuala, Thank you for the records on Ned and Mary’s marriage, and the birth info for some of his children. I guess that John is the father for Ned. Written proof always works for me, particularly if the document is old. I guess I need to start pursuing Ned’s birthplace in order to find out both his parents.

  • Choose File button I guess the same as you would for an attachment.  It appears when you press post reply below the reply box, choose the file you want, upload it and then post.  One thing the spelling of Clogh is Clough but today is known as Clogh, Castlecomer not be confused with a Clough which is in County Laois.  I think your relatives may have lived in Tourtane in Clogh (it is just a laneway/tiny part of the area) as I remember reading years and I mean years ago something about a mother and son living there in the late 1800's but cannot find anything on them in the census of 1901 or 1911.  Purcill today is more than likely Purcell.  Clogh church was built in 1840 so that may be your starting point.  The PP there is Fr. Tobin, lovely man.  Work at that time would have mainly involved mining as there is a coal seam running across the area and many were reliant on that or its associated trades.  There is a FB page called Clogh Photographs and you could ask the question on there as though many left the area and went to America etc., many remained to.  My interest remains in the Ring side and whether there could be connections to my own family.  Hope this all helps.

  • Hi, have been in touch with the Parish office in Clogh re Edward and Mary's marriage.  The secretary is going to check the records and if she finds anything give me a shout to go and look at them.  It won't be for a week or so as there are two weddings and the Papal visit taking place this week.

  • Looking back at the occupations for Ned Ring and Tobias Purcell, they were both listed as Colliers, or having to do with the coal industry.  I'm thinking that Ned's son Michael probably had employment in this business too. Are there any employment records for the coal industry's? Any stories about coal mining that people would share? How about any mining accidents?

  • Quite possibly Tim mining was the main employment in these parts up until the late 1960's.  There are a couple of books written by local man Seamus Walsh about those times, the second was only published this year and I list them below along with a you tube video below.

  • Thanks for the update, Nuala.

I never knew the extent of coal mining in the area.

Much of what was written happened after my Ring family left for the US in 1896, but I’m sure they experienced most of the hardship,

Ned and Mary Ring had 12 children, 5 died in Ireland.

4 of them died between childbirth and 2 yrs, one died age 19, presumably working in the mines.

I’m sure health and living conditions were a major contributor to their demise.

  • Quite possibly, coal mining was very hard upon the men, many of whom died young by our standards and there were so many diseases, easily dealt with today but no form of health benefit unless you could pay that was beyond the ability of so many.

  • Hello, I am looking for death information for Michael Ring, aged 19  he would have died around 1896 in Clogh and I’m thinking he was involved in coal mining. His parents were Edward “Ned” Ring and Mary (née Purcell) Ring. Ned and Mary lost 4 other children under the age of 2. I’m curious of the custom back then for burying toddler and infant children.        Thanks, Tim Miller

  • Starting in 1864 Births and Deaths were required to be registered in Ireland. On Ancestry the database is called "All Ireland, Civil Registration Deaths Index 1864-1958" In there I found a 21 year old named Michael Ring whose death was registered  in the Millstreet Civil Registration District in Jul-Aug-Sept 1896 time frame. I am not sure if this is your Michael Ring. How do you know he died in 1896 in Ireland?  I also found a  Michael Ring whose death was registered in 1877 Castelcomer, the child was an infanty listed as 0 years old.  Hope this helps.

  • Thank you for the information, Marge. We have a Ring family tree that one of my great Aunts had a genealogist research and summarize. It is possible there could be a mistake (or two) in there.  I will search the Ancestry database to see what else I can turn up. Thanks again for all your help. Tim

  • Hello Marge, it is quite possible that somebody flipped some dates. If Michael Ring was born in 1877 and died in 1896, he would have been 19 at the time of his death. If Michael was born and died in 1877, that falls in line with the early deaths that haunted this family. 4 other children < 4 years of age. Whomever put the document together may have had 1896 in their head, as it was the birth/death year of the infant child Margaret, AND the year that Ned and Mary emigrated to the US. In any case it makes for interesting research. Can you suggest what might have been done with a newborn death or a child < 2 yrs old? Thanks so much for all your help.  Tim Miller

  • Hello Friends in Castlecomer.

I am looking for birth information for a Michael Ring, est. birth 1872 - 1880.

His parents would be Edward Ned Ring and Mary Purcell.

If the birth was recorded in a register, a snapshot of that would be great.

I am trying to tie out which Michael Ring belonged to our family.

The one who died in 1877 and listed as 0 years, or the one whe died at 21 years, and if this one, what year did he die.

Do death notices list the parents?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

  • Hello Clough and Castlecomer friends, I am looking for death and burial information for Tobias Purcell and Anne (Kelly) whose children Mary (1849), Ann (1853)and James(1851) were all born in Clough. The last child was born in 1853. I believe the church was St  Patrick's. Tobias (1830-1868) birth could be as early as 1810  I believe he was born in Firoda  and died in Clough where he was a coal miner  Anne (Kelly) Purcell was born about 1833 in Moonenroe no death date.any birth, death information or cemetery stone picture would be great

    sincerely, Tim Miller

  • Tim, Hi You said Patrick died 1918 and the wife married his cousin Michael and had 2 children with him. So she could not of died 1918 the same yr as Patrick if she had 2 children later. Probably he died 1916. I have Purcell and Ryan's but don't know of any of them coming over to USA prior to my Mother from Coolderry Ireland. I see plenty of people looking for Purcell in Offaly and Tipperay so Patrick might be from that area. I can look for thhem in Boston on the census and get back to you.

  • Mary, I'm sorry that I may have confused people with so many dates. I will try to straighten them out. My grandfather Patrick Ring married Angela Boon in 1905 in NYC. They had 5 children, Edward, Patrick, Louise, Catherine and Alice. Patrick died in 1918 and his widow Angela married Michael Ryan, first cousin to Patrick  in 1919. Michael and Angela had 2 children, James and Anne. Angela and Anne died during childbirth in 1924. Michael Ryan was the son of James Ryan and Anne PURCELL Conville Ryan. Anne PURCELL was sister to my GGrandmother Mary PURCELL. They were children of Tobias Purcell and Anne KELLY. Tobias and Anne also had a son James, all three children were born in Clough.  Tim
