Hello,

I live in the USA and am involved with the Kansas City Irish Center and met Ireland XO Founder when he vivsited.  I am looking for the 1911 census for my grandmother.  I found her in the 1901 census at 6 Chapel Street, Latteragh but can't find her in 1911.  Her name was Sarah Conway born 4th. September 1897 and was age 3 in the 1901 census.

Mother Sarah age 45, Father Michael age 55, Siblings Minnie 19, Thomas 17, Denis 15, Mary Kate 14, Edward 12, Margaret 10, Bridget 7 and my grandmother was 3.

Perhaps by 1911 all would have left home and maybe my great grandparents were deceased but my grandmother would only have been 13.  She passed away when I was very young so I didn't learn much about her.  Would appreciate any help to locate her record.

Best, Geraldine

    Welcome to ireland Reaching Out!

The family reported their return in Gaelic in 1911    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Tipperary/Latteragh/To…;   So 13 year old Sorca is your Sarah.

  • Roger,

Thanks so much for this information!  Gosh that is so interesting.  Wonder why they decided to do that.  Maybe my great grandmother did one and great grandfather did the other :)  Anyway thank you so much.  I will let others know.

Nationalistic fervor including greater interest in the Gaelic language increased significantly after the 1901 census. I've seen a number of 1911 census records where the return was in Gaelic. Basically they were taking a personal stand against the English government running Ireland.
