I am new to your Website and look forward to posting. I am researching my family history and I believe that one of my ancestors was a Harbour Master in Kerry. His name was either Charles McCormick or William Charles McCormick born around 1790. He had a son Dennis who came to Dumfries in Scotland between 1840 and 1850. Charles McCormick/William Charles McCormick was married to Mary McDonald. I wonder if anyone could suggest any lines of research I can pursue to firm this up. Bill Smyth

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on a free site www.irishgenealogy.ie which has Co. Kerry church records. I did not find a baptismal record for Denis with father Charles or William. In fact there was only one Denis McCormack baptismal record (different father's name) in Kerry from the late 1700s until 1860. The surname is not very common in Kerry. You can use this site https://www.swilson.info/sdist.php  developed by one of our volunteers that shows where surnames were found in the mid-19th century. Antrim, Westmeath and Tipperary had the most McCormick/McCormack records.

I also searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find a baptismal record for Denis or a marriage record for Charles or William to Mary McDonald anywhre in Ireland

Likely William came from another part of Ireland and Denis was baptized in a different county than Kerry. As a Harbour Master, William would have likely moved around.

You may want to add Denis' story to our XO Chronicles site and posibly someone will see a connection  https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-dat…

    Have you considered DNA testing?

  • Thank you Roger for the very comprehensive information. In actual fact the only positive "Proof" of Charles McCormick's (or William Charles') existence is the death record of his son Dennis in Scotland. I know Dennis came to Scotland before 1851 because he appears in the Scottish Census of that year aged 33. I have had my DNA tested but the connections all seem to be from my father's side of the family (Smyth from Baker Street in Belfast). Many of them moved to Scotland and then made their way to New Jersey. The McCormick's are from my mother's side.
