Visiting An Chloch, Co. Kilkenney on Tuesday, July 16, 2019

There's still a Catholic Church on the same site near the village of Clogh, it's located just south of the village and little off the main road. See Google Street View - Saint Patrick's Church, Clogh, Co. Kilkenny   The building is located in the townland also called Clogh which is in Castlecomer civil parish. The Church may have been upgraded slightly over the years, but based on the historic OSI maps it's at the same location, and around the same size and shape as it was in the 1840s. See the attached map extracts from c1840 and c1890, along with a modern OSI map.

There's a short entry for the village in Samuel Lewis' Topographical Dictionary of 1837 - see Clough, Co. Kilkenny, and a more detailed entry for the civil parish - Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny.

Hello, my name is Tim Miller and I would be very interested in any information you turn up for the Purcell’s. My G Grandmother was Mary Purcell daughter of Tobias Purcell and Anne Kelly.

When you visit the church and rectory in Clough, ask the priest if the old handwritten records are available for viewing. If so, it could be a very rewarding and memorable trip.

Funny you should mention lunch and Clogh...my husband and i still rave about the wonderful lunch (more like a dinner) that we had in Clogh in 2016 at the Clogh Parish Centre, on R426. If they are still serving lunch there in July 2019, it should be easy to spot as it will be a busy hub, with a parking lot there, through which you can see the church in the distance across the field.

Thanks everyone for your replies; my apologies for being out of touch for so many months! Does anyone have advice on finding a contact email or phone for St. Patrick's Church in Clogh? We will definitely stop there, but would love to find out if they're serving lunch as well as make an appointment to see parish records if possible. I've searched the web, but have not had any luck finding hours or contact information. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place?

Sorry I missed your comment on when my GGrandmother was born.
Mary was 1 of 4 children born to Tobias Purcell and Anne Kelley.
James b 1851
Anne b 1853
Mary b 1856
Martin b ????

Anne married James Ryan.
Mary married Ned Ring on 6 Feb 1872 in St. Patrick’s Church.

Both Mary’s father Tobias and her husband Ned were in the coal mining industry.
