Patrick Scanlon Assisted Immigrant Dec 1841

According to the New South Wales, Australia, Assisted Immigrant Passenger Lists, 1828-1896 for Patrick Scanlon, he was a 28y.o. carpenter, native of Tipperary, Parish "Mearly"? He sailed on the "Comet" which departed Cork on the 5 Aug 1841 and arrived at Sydney on 3 Dec 1841.

His parents were John & Honorah. "R R Grace PP" certified his Registry of Baptism. Persons certifying his character were: John Scanlon, Gaile, and Patk "Hokes"?, "Kellaugh"?

Can anyone help with deciphering name of Parish "Mearly"? and name and place "Hokes"?, "Kellaugh"? (pleas see attached copy of passenger entry)

Thank you,

Shirley Turner

  • Hi Shirley, I am glad you attached the jpg.
    Ok, you ask............
Persons certifying his character were: John Scanlon, Gaile, and Patk "Hokes"?, "Kellaugh"?
John Scanlon Gaile, Gaile is a townland, use the - and click out 4 times, you will see a town called Thurles.
    https://www.bing.com/search?q=gaile+tipperary+map&qs=n&form=QBRE&sp=-1&p...
    Patk Hokes =  Patt Stokes
"Kellaugh"      = Killough it's a townland all in the area of Gaile.

The place name Killough, it's a townland near a place called Moycarky, where a lot of people went to Grafton, Australia.

    The jpg you sent
This is what I found some years ago, a list of Tipperary people to Australia. This is the record I had for Patrick
SCANLON Patrick 1841 28 Miarty John / Honorah both alive a carpenter Ship = Comet
But, did you check for other Scanlons?
see this.......... where it says (Tipp) it means Tipperary Town, it may be just another pair with the same parents names, but on the same ship and the same year!
The jpg you sent, any chance of looking at the original record book again and seeing if they were connected/related.
SCANLON Jeremiah 1841 22 (Tipp) John / Hannah both alive Youghal mentioned Ship = Comet
SCANLON Margaret 1841 19 (Tipp) xx not given   Youghal House mentioned xx     A brother on board    Ship = Comet

Up to now "Miarty" or "Mearty" no idea as yet.
I looked up R Grace the PP, he was Parish Priest of Moycarky, so he must have used a townland name.
We will be in Ireland in July and down that way, I will see if the name comes up on the satnav.

1850 John is still alive, Griffiths Valuation shows he is paying rent/tax

    I hope this has helped.

  • Many thanks for your information Margot.

I see that Moykarky? has been written below Miarty? on Patrick's catalogue entry.

There is also a sister Margaret (see attached).

I'm not sure about "Tipperary Town"...looks more like a reference to County Tipperary...?

    Regards,

    Shirley
