Hello,

My GGG grandfather, Patrick Minehan, was born in County Clare in 1817 and moved at age 25 to County Carlow.  There, he met my GGG grandmother, Margaret Connelly (birth year around 1824).  They were married sometime after 1842 and emigrated to Quebec Canada around 1846, settled in New England for 8 years, then moved to Wisconsin.  In 1873, he and the family moved to Green Isle, Minnesota where he resided until his death.  He and Margaret had 8 children, Denis (1851), Alice--my GG grandmother (1856), Edward (1857), Michael (1860), Margaret (1862), Thomas (1863), and Mary (1865).  All of this information has been confirmed in his newspaper obituary.

Does anyone know where in County Claire Patrick lived and if he had any siblings?  I believe his father's name was John Minehan and he was born around 1797 and his mother was Ann (don't know her last name) birth year 1801.

I am planning a trip to Ireland in April and would like to connect with my Irish roots.  Thank you, Lori

  • Attached, is a photo of 2 of Patrick Minehan's granddaughters, Nellie (my great grandmother) and Genevieve.  (Nellie and Genevieve's mother was Alice Minehan.) Four of Nellie's children are also in the photo, including my grandmother, Katherine.

  • Dear Lori:

Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome to the site.  I have looked for a church record for a Patrick Minehan and a Margaret Connelly on both Roots Ireland and the Irish Genealogy website (church records section) without any success.  I have also looked at the Clare Library website for a John Minehan from the Tithe Applotment Books (these were taken in 1824-1837) and there is a John Minahan (note the variation of spelling) who resided in Culleen townland, Kilkeedy civil parish (Ruan/Tubber RomanCatholic parish).  This John may be worth looking further at.

The Kilkeedy parish baptism register is online through the Clare Library website at the following link:  http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/don_tran/bmd/baptism_records_tubber.htm

The Clare Library website is a great resource for anyone with Clare roots, and you might take a further look at it for other information.  In addition, I noted that there appear to be a lot of Minehans in the parish of Killaloe and this may also be worth keeping in mind as a possible place.  You might also consider creating an Ancestor Profile for Patrick and Margaret as another option to finding out further information.  You can do so through the XO Chronicles tab at the top of the page.

If you have any further questions, please let me know.

    Kind regards,

    Jane

  • Dear Jane,

Sincere thanks, for your help and for providing the Clare resource sites for me to continue my research journey!  I have done Ancestry DNA testing and have matched with multiple Minehan connections, but sadly, none of these people I've reached out to have any additional information with regard to my Irish ancestors, John or Patrick Minehan.  Since Patrick had 8 children, there are many descendants here in the USA.

Would you have the knowledge of what is the best mode of transportation in the Killaloe Ireland area for seeing the city, church, and potential homesite of my ancestors (if I am able to find the information on it)?  I'm not sure if I should rent a car while there or find someone to drive us around the region.

    With much gratitude and thanks,

    Lori Makela

  • Hi Lori:

I’m delighted to hear that you will be making a trip over.  I would recommend hiring a car if you are comfortable driving.  If not,  you can hire a driver.  There are local taxi drivers in Killaloe and Limerick is not far away.  I do know of a Minehan who I will contact to see if he is a match to you.

In addition, I know some local historians in Killaloe who may be able to help. Your ancestor Patrick may have been associated with the canal or waterways there.

If you have any questions, please contact me directly at:  jhalloranryan@irelandxo.com.

    All the best,

     Jane

  • Hi Lori,

Attached is Patrick and Margaret marriage entry on 15-Feb- in Leighlinbridge, Co Carlow. You will notice that Patricks surname is spelled  Munahan. This is because ,the priest wrote it as he heard it being spoken.

  • Lori,

Based on the combined information that you gave and the marriage entry, I believe that Margaret was the daughter of Thomas Connelly and Alice Doyle. She was born on Nov 21 1820 Killanane, Leighlinbridge, Co Clare.

This link for Patrick and Margaret's marriage entry in the parish register.

This is for Margaret's baptism entry in the parish register.

I havent found any siblings as of now.

On the Minehans, I have a lot of infomation on the Limerick Minahans. I would like to try to track your Patrick down. Do you have a gedmatch number?

If you have any questions, please contact me directly at croom@irelandxo.com.
