Almost by accident, I have my great-grandmother's birthplace an Annacarriga in 1866. Her mother and father are listed as being in Killaloe, which I think is the religious parist. The family name was Storan (variations). I have walked it back to her grandfather Bourke Storan. This was a fairly large family. The records are a little fuzzy but I think her mother was Mary Kennedy and her grandmother was Margaret Murphy. According to NY census records, her father, John Storan, born 1828, was a mason. There were other siblings born in Killaloe area: Mary, Bridget, John, who came to America together, I believe with their mother Mary. It's not clear if John came earlier. I find all of them in 1870 in NYC in the census along with a new sister.  Any takers on this one? I am not sure the family fared that well after arriving. The only one I see around in 1920 is a sister Sarah Storan Brundage. I would love to find a connection or a church.

  • Hi Barbara:

Thanks for your query.   Annacarriga is in the civil parish of Ogonnelloe and is in the townland of Carrownakilly.  .  The Ogonnelloe parish registers have been digitised and are online through the National Library of Ireland through this link:  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0803  Baptisms are from 1832 and Marriages are from 1857.  In addition, the registers have been voluntarily transcribed and are avaiable on the Clare Library website which also has a number of other Ogonnelloe resources that you may find interesting.  The link for Ogonnelloe parish is here:http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/places/ogonnelloe.htm

I'm going to forward this query to our Ogonnelloe volunteer Mike who may be able to assist you further.

The very best of luck with your research and pleasedo not hesitate to come back to us with any questions.

    Kind regards,

    Jane

  • Wow. I recieved three replies on this. Thanks for sending your ideas and information.

Couple of things...I have actually spoken to a DNA match whose great-grandmother seems to me to be the sister of my great-grandmother. I think. That would make their grandfather the common ancestor between me and my DNA match. This family, and a few others, have the father and grandfather in their trees. My matched cousin was a bit skeptical as he said they all came from Tipperary, not Clare. Borders are fluid. People moved around. I'm  going with the DNA for now and see what we get.

I appreciate that my inquiry was forwarded, to a volunteer and also for the link to the library.

I will also check the national registers.

    Thank yo for your help.

  • That is excellent information. It provides context around the whole story. Contest is important in this kind of search. For example, you need to know something about the enumeration process and understand that mistakes are made. My 2x great aunt was listed as a male and her brother, as female, basically because the enumerator did not use a straight edge to enter the information.

Then there’s the name of Welsh. When I started this, many records, especially religious records, would use Walsh, or even Walsh/Welsh on the record, as late as 1910 for the marriage of my grandfather John Welsh to Elizabeth Murphy. But every census on any Welsh family has Welsh. Presumably, the enumerator wrote down what the household members were saying and didnt wing it.

Whatever was going on in the culture is good to know. I recently toured the Tenement Museum in New York City, just to get a sense of the neighborhoods of the times that I am researching.

  • I thought about this some more and did a little more detailed look at some records. My 2x great-grandmother, a Mary Kennedy (shows Kenndy, but I am going with Kennedy for now), appears as being born in Killaloe but her marriage is in Tipperary. One of their daughters, Bridget, born 1863,  birthplace is 28 Dec,1863 in Temple Kelly, Ballina, Tipperary. So there we have it.

  • Hi Barbara,

I'm also a Storan/Storen. My 3x-ggparents were John Storen and Catherine Hickey from Earlhill, O'Briensbridge, County Clare. John & Catherine emigrated to Montreal, Canada with their 6 children (Mary, Bridget, Catherine, Ellen, John & Margaret). A couple of generations later my great-grandparents, Frank Doherty & Harriett Storen, moved down to Boston, where I was born. I wonder if we're DNA matches. My username on ancestry.com is pattyvitale64.

  • look in the Boston area?

Well now. I did see a record in the valuations regarding O’Briensbridge for a John and honestly can’t remember theveife’s name. But she was also on the valuation. It seemed off the mark for my family but there were multiple Storen’s on the area and all with the same name. So my 2x had siblings and some trees put him as Bourke Storen’s son and some as John’s son. Are you still in the Boston area? I am northwest of Boston. We could have a conversation. I will look for that match. Thanks.

  • Hi Barbara:

All of the replies have given you quite a bit to go on,  As Miriam has noted, Killaloe and Ogonnelloe are very close to the Tipperary border (as well as Limerick) so there would certainly have been some movement between the three counties.  I would recommend that you have a look through the Ogonnelloe and Killaloe parish registers as the surname "Storan" is not a very common surname but it is noted as being in O'Briensbridge in Griffith's Valuation in 1855.  As Miriam stated, it is close to Killaloe and on the border of Limerick,Clare and Tipperary.  The Clare Library would be a good place to research and certainly, if you have DNA connections, ask about the location.

Please keep us posted as to your progress and please consider creating an Ancestor profile for one of your Storan ancestors.  You can do so on the XO Chronicles feature located at the top of this page and this link:  https://irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-database

If you need any further help, please let us know.  I have forwarded this query to an Ogonnelloe historian who may be able to shed further light on the family origins in Annacarriga.

    All the best,

  • Barbara, I’m not still in the Boston area but I try to get up there several times per year to visit family. I moved down to Maryland a number of years ago.  Patty
